    • NATHALIE NEWKING (AMERICAN, 1904-1954) BATHERS, 1927 OIL ON CANVAS 30 X 36 INCHE
      Mar. 08, 2019

NATHALIE NEWKING (AMERICAN, 1904-1954) BATHERS, 1927 OIL ON CANVAS 30 X 36 INCHE

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Nathalie Newking (American, 1904-1954) Bathers, 1927 Oil on canvas 30 x 36 inches (76.2 x 91.4 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Newking 1927 Signed, dated, and titled on the stretcher: Nathalie / Newking / 1927 / "Bathers" In celebration of Women's History Month PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York; Private collection, Mesquite, Texas. American Modernist Nathalie Newking trained initially with Robert Henri in New York, and then following her marriage to painter Lorser Feitelson moved in a new direction artistically. During the 1920s, the couple settled in Paris and there developed a decorative figurative "neoclassical" style influenced by early Italian Renaissance masters. They exhibited regularly in New York at the Daniel Gallery before moving to California in 1927 when their daughter was born. The present work shows a strong indebtedness to compositions of bathers which Feitelson himself favored during their Paris period. The streamlined, strongly undulating smooth forms of the figures' anatomy can be seen in a 1923 work by Feitelson, which sold through Heritage Auctions, May 17, 2011, lot 64159. Although the present painting is dated 1927 on the front, the stretcher bar is titled "Bathers" and dated 1924 in Newking's hand. This suggests Newking started the work in Paris but completed it and signed it on the front in 1927 once she and Feitelson returned to the United States and settled in California. When she and Feitelson split up, Nathalie Newking moved in a more sculptural direction with her art, and embraced a greater monumentality in her figures which seemed to respond to American Regionalism of the 1930s and 40s.
