Watercolor. 25 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. This watercolor depicts an interior scene within the Temple. The slightly upturned point of view contributes to the majesty of the structure: Newman simultaneously conveys the height of the walls and columns as well as the intricate relief carvings of hieroglyphs on the walls. The composition allows for the viewer to imagine what is beyond the doorway: Newman’s fascination with the structure is evident in the work. Newman is meticulous in his depiction of the desert light and the sandy color scheme. The watercolor has a golden hue that reflects the ethereal quality of the scene to the viewer. The piece is in great condition with lively, saturated colors.

Watercolor. 25 1/2 x 16 1/2 in. Abu Simbel is an ancient temple complex located in Nubia, in southern Egypt. The complex is famous for its two temples, the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor, which were both built during the New Kingdom era of Ancient Egypt. The interior of the temples are adecorated with intricate carvings and paintings depicting various scenes from Ancient Egyptian mythology. Abu Simbel was rediscovered in the 19th century by European explorers, and it is not unusual that Newman, who traveled to Egypt every year, would have been intrigued by the site. Newman’s watercolor is delightfully skilled and precise in its use of Cartesian perspectivalism: the long, decorated hallway exudes golden light and culminates in a window overlooking the vista. Newman likely made this work after visiting the temple during one of his stays in Egypt. The American Pre-Raphaelite influence on the work is evident: Newman is equally moved by the beauty of the architecture of the temple as his desire to depict it realistically and in great detail. His bold, saturated use of watercolor heightens the lifelike quality of the space, while conveying its timelessness. The piece is in great condition with light mat stains on the back.

(66 x 43.2cm) Provenance Private Collection, Vermont. Note American born Henri Newman travelled to Europe in the spring of 1870. First based in Paris, the Franco-Prussian war forced him to relocate to Italy, where he met his wife, Mary Watson Willis, and lived for the rest of his life. There, Newman slowly abandoned landscape painting to focus on architectural studies instead, some of which were inspired by the writings of English critic John Ruskin. From the mid-1880s, Newman and his started to spend their winters in Egypt, traveling from site to site on a large houseboat which soon became a familiar sight to the locals and many British tourists visiting temple ruins along the Nile, such as the one depicted in the present work, the Temple complex of Philae. First erected on Philae Island, near the First Cataract of the Nile River, the Temple now stands on the nearby Agilkia Island due to the Aswan Low Dam in 1902, which flooded the original site. Philae is part of a complex of several temples and palaces built between 380 and 145 BC, the most ancient of which was dedicated to the goddess Isis, depicted here. While Newman focused on the entrance to the temple, and especially the open gate outside in other works, the present watercolor pays close attention to the beautiful papyriform capitals of the open temple.

Along with John Bunyon Bristol, Newman was one of the first significant American painters to paint in Florida. He was attracted to the area for health reasons, and painted in the area of St. Augustine from 1868 until the summer of 1869. Some of these paintings were later acquired by his friend and patron, John Ruskin, the English aesthetician, with whom he traveled. Today he remains known primarily for his membership in the American Pre-Raphaelite Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art, but his most accomplished work was likely done between 1875 and 1900 during his expatriate years. At that time, he established himself as one of the most important, some say the most important, American watercolorists working abroad. His specialty subjects were religious architectural structures, floral pictures, and views of endangered historical landmarks. Many of his paintings were of Egypt where he lived much of his life, visiting for many months each year for 25 years, as well as in Italy. In 1869, he studied with Thomas Couture in France, and shortly after, he was a student of Jean Leon Gerome who emphasized figural drawing and painting. However, he didn't stay long with Gerome because he was disappointed in the instruction and was also insecure with the onset of the Franco-Prussian War. Moving to Italy, he specialized in ecclesiastical masterpieces of architecture, and from there he traveled to Egypt and later to Japan.

Newman, dated March 6 and inscribed as titled (ll) Watercolor and pencil on paper 26 x 17 inches Provenance: Private collection Elected to membership in the Association for the Advancement of Truth in Art in 1864, Newman was a follower of the truth-to-nature precepts stemming from the writings of John Ruskin. After traveling to Europe in 1870, Newman had the opportunity not only to meet Ruskin, but also to travel with him. The two shared their mutual interest in architecture while visiting several Italian cities. Newman continued his fascination with architectural form during the many winters he spent in Egypt, beginning in 1887, which resulted in the largest body of work by an American artist of the era of the land and its monuments. Living on a large dahabeah (houseboat) on the Nile, Newman created meticulous and often delicately rendered depictions of ancient sites. This image is of the famed façade of the temple of Abu Simbel, featuring two of the four 20-meter high colossi of Rameses II that flanked the entrance of the rock-cut structure. Depicting the statues from below, Newman draws attention to their grand scale and frozen expressions. The sand and rubble at the foot of the statues, the cracks and broken areas in them, and the sculptural fragments on the ground add to the poetic feeling of this grand spectacle lasting through time, while Newman's image provides a historic record of this subject long before the temple was moved to the bank of Lake Nasser. (no. 16) Previous to his permanent move to Europe in 1870, Newman resided in New York City, but he also spent time in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he derived the material for this scene of the Berkshires. The subject, Mount Everett, is the second highest peak in the state. Newman rendered this mountain on several occasions in his career, and his strong sense of its poetic qualities in winter resonate from this depiction. While employing a limited palette, he juxtaposed rich blues and violets with an array of warm ochers and rust tones, combining this approach with a varied brushwork. His expansive composition and clear horizon line are distinguishing features of his watercolor aesthetic, adding to the quiet, wistful feeling of this scene. In his June 1884 article on Newman's work, Buxton Forman could have been referring to this painting in his comment: "I recall, as vividly as if I had seen it yesterday, an American snow scene, with an elaborate tracery of trees still bearing autumn-tinted leaves."
