Featured in this lot is an oil painting of Mount Hood by artist Robert Newman who was born in 1827 and died in 1912. The painting features a wonderfully and professionally crafted oil on canvas construction. The painting is a scene of Mount Hood, the largest peak in Oregon, and a active volcano with a lake at the base of the peak with wooded area around the mountain. The painting is marked on the back 'R. Newman' and 'Mount Hood.' Robert Loftin Newman (November 10, 1827 March 31, 1912) was an American painter and stained glass designer. He specialized in oil on canvas as his medium. He is sometimes associated with Albert Pinkham Ryder as a painter of mood. His works include Good Samaritan, painted in 1886, Flight into Egypt, Harvest Time, Sailboat Manned by Two Men, and The Bather. The condition of this painting is good with one flaw where someone took a sharpie and wrote on the back of the canvas and is slightly bleeding through but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this framed oil painting are 23" x 33" and the visible artwork measures 19 1/2" x 29 1/2".*

Robert Loftin Newman (Tennessee/NY/ France, 1827-1912) oil on canvas nocturnal landscape painting, "The Flight Into Egypt", depicting Mary, attired in crimson and holding the Christ child, both seated upon an animal being led by two figures in white, along with a procession of other indistinct figures and animals in the distance. Signed lower left corner in red "R L Newman". Label en verso for Babcock Galleries, 19 East 49th Street New York. Additional, partially legible incising to stretcher with artist information lower right. Housed in a period American gilt carved and textured frame. Sight: 19 1/4" H x 29 1/4" W. Framed: 27" H x 37" W. Note: This painting is pictured on page 128 (figure 18) of the book "Robert Loftin Newman" by Marchal E. Landgren, published for The National Collection of Fine Arts by the Smithsonian Institution Press, City of Washington, 1974. At the time, the book listed the painting's whereabouts as unknown, with the known previous provenance as follows: "Purchased by Miss Palmie at Mrs. Sanborn's studio sale, 1909; E.C. Babcock, New York, 1926: Hon. John G. Winant, Concord, NH, 1928". It was recently discovered in a Northeastern estate sale. Artist Biography: Robert Newman was born in Richmond, Virginia, and grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee. He is sometimes associated with Albert Pinkham Ryder, an artist with whom he shared a similar style and artistic technique. For Newman (who never knew his father) mothers and children were frequent subject matter, along with Old and New Testament themes; in fact another painting with this same title and subject is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution (accession no. 1975.57, gift of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Webster). Newman studied briefly with Thomas Couture in Paris in 1850, and on a second trip to Paris in 1854, William Morris Hunt introduced him to J. F. Millet and to the Barbizon painters. Newman served with the Confederate forces during the Civil War before moving to New York. He returned to Tennessee in 1872 and tried to establish an academy of fine arts in Nashville, but by 1873 he was back in New York, where he resided the rest of his life. He rarely exhibited his work. Seen as a unique American artist who painted in the style of Albert Pinkham Ryder, Robert Loftin Newman was known for his unusual process of revealing and manipulation of the paint’s surface and color. Newman was born in Richmond, Virginia, and studied classic technique in Paris with Millet and William Morris Hunt, before ultimately settling in New York. He is noted for using shadow to create an air of mystery in his works and often depicted biblical scenes. The Witch of Endor, in keeping with Newman’s favorite theme, depicts the meeting between King Saul and the Witch of Endor found in Samuel I 28:3-25. On the eve of battle with the Philistines, fearful Saul seeks assurance from the Lord that he will be victorious. After receiving no answer in his dreams or through prophets, Saul, disguised and cloaked by the dark of night, visits the Witch of Endor so she may call upon Samuel’s spirit. Angered at being disturbed, Samuel tells Saul that God has turned his back on him in favor of David and prophesizes that he will lose the battle and that he and his sons will die. The Witch of Endor is often portrayed as a sympathetic figure who comforts Saul and feeds him before sending him on his way. Newman’s portrayal uses shadow and careful color manipulation to heighten the mystery and drama of the scene. Exhibition History: The work was displayed in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s “Paintings by Robert Loftin Newman” in 1935, in the Knoedler Gallery’s “Two American Romantics of the Nineteenth Century, Robert Loftin Newman and Albert Pinkham Ryder” in 1939, in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ “A Memorial Exhibition of the Work of Robert Loftin Newman” in 1942, the Smithsonian Institution National Collection of Fine Art’s “Robert Loftin Newman 1827-1912” in 1974, and in the American Embassy in London as part of the Arts in Embassies Program in the 1990s. The work has also been published in London Studio, 7 (May 1934); Marchal E. Landgren’s Robert Loftin Newman: 1827-1912, exhibition catalog (1974), and Art News Annual, XXXIII, edited by Thomas B. Hess (1966).

Robert Loftin Newman created several canvases on the theme of prophecy including two paintings entitled The Fortune Teller (Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum). The image of the seer was popular among European symbolists such as Edvard Much and Gustav Klimt, with whose work Newman's bears comparison, due to his interest in exploring spiritual content within an everyday context. The first owner of this painting, Nestor Sanborn, was a friend of the artist in his later years. He and his wife, Caroline, promoted Newman's work, and he left an outline of the artist's life that has provided a basis for the study of his career. However, Newman's main supporter was the sculptor Daniel Chester French, who provided him with a monthly stipend. Robert Loftin Newman American, 1827-1912 Wayside Madonna Oil on canvas 6 1/8 x 8 inches Provenance: Archives of American Art The key American painter of the late nineteenth century to focus on religious themes, Newman often depicted the subject of the Madonna and Child, envisioning it through the lens of his mystical orientation. Using a layering of rich, deep color, the legacy of his training with Thomas Couture in Paris, he treated figural forms as simple masses blended into landscapes that hover between the recognizable and a realm of fantasy. Here the mother's tiredness and tenderness exude from Newman's expressive treatment. This painting was possibly the work once entitled Wayside Repose, exhibited in the 1894 exhibition of Newman's paintings held at Knoedler Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (no. 92, lent by Miss Walker). Traveling to Europe in 1850, he studied with Thomas Couture, assimilating his teacher's aesthetic of broad paint handling and a generalization of forms. During a second trip to Paris in 1854, Newman became acquainted with Jean-Francois Millet, spending several months at his Barbizon home and becoming one of the first Americans to purchase his work. When the Whitney Museum of American Art held a show of his work in 1934, Edward Alden Jewell stated: "even though we continue to feel that he was minor, [this exhibition] proves him to have been a man of genius, with a fine and sensitive appreciation both of the values discernible in human life and of the materials with which an artist is wont to express the vision that is his." (New York Times, January 20, 1935). A show of Newman's work was held at the National Collection of Fine Arts in 1973. This romantic image is suggestive of the work of Albert Pinkham Ryder.
