Attributed To Albert Newsam (1809-1864) Z. Taylor

    Est: $5,000 - $10,000

Attributed To Albert Newsam (1809-1864) Portrait of President Zachary Taylor, oil on canvas 30.25" x 25". Unsigned. Based on a 1847 lithograph by Albert Newsam (1809-1864, National Portrait Gallery, Washington) which presumably was based on a daguerreotype by Mathew Brady. Based on similar paintings at the Philadelphia Historical Society, including his self portrait which he painted from a daguerreotype (he wrote” this is my first oil portrait, based on a daguerreotype) Newsam was a deaf-mute lithographer, and drew portraits of Presidents John Adams, William Henry Harrison, Andrew Jackson, James K Polk, and two of Zachary Taylor. The Plain relatively fine weave canvas is mounted onto a four member half-lap, keyable spruce stretcher, which appears to be original. There is a colorman's stamp: “Prepared by Edwd Dechaux New York.” Original tacks along the bottom edge suggest that the canvas has never been removed from the stretcher. The tacking margins show no indication of a ground layer. The paint layer is quite thin, with almost no impasto. There is a discolored varnish layer. There is considerable paint lifting, particularly in the upper right of the oval background. There are two small canvas tears with associated paint loss in his jacket lower left and upper left shoulder, including a portion of the background. Although the face and head are in good condition, there is abrasion to the background paint layer, particularly in the upper right, due to former harsh cleaning. Conservation report by H. Travers Newton. Provenance: The painting was given to William Dudley Talley (Corsicana Texas & New Orleans) from Taylor himself to solve a debt. Taylor's daughter Mrs Gerald Webb (Dr. Gerald Webb) remained neighbors to Deidre Talley Allen & Manfred Allen of Colo. Springs; the great grandparents of the current owner. See photographed letters. Square canvas measures 30" x 25" frame measures 40" x 35.5"
