The gritty, urban landscape through the eyes of Algernon Newton becomes picturesque, serene, and captivating. Often referred to as the Canaletto of the canals, Newton was celebrated for his ability to infuse urban scenes with a calm, contemplative atmosphere-a skill honed through his training at the Slade School of Fine Art and the London School of Art in Kensington. Newton recorded and interpreted on canvas the industrial and technological changes of his era, capturing the transformation of the urban landscape. His connection to the Royal Academy began early, exhibiting for the first time in 1903 while still a student. Over the years, his reputation grew, leading to his election as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1936 and as a full member in 1943. In 1980, the Royal Academy hosted a retrospective exhibition of his work.In House on the Surrey Canal, Newton showcases his remarkable talent for capturing the quiet allure of industrial London. The painting is bathed in a soft light that invites the viewer to linger, guiding the eye across sunlit crates, the shimmering waters of the canal, and the townhouse that stands quietly yet enigmatically in the foreground. Newton's meticulous attention to light, shaped by his admiration for Canaletto, is particularly evident here. He frequently visited the National Gallery in London to study Canaletto's mastery of light in his large-scale Venetian landscapes. Newton adopted Canaletto's technique of tonal contrasts and the layering of thin glazes to create a flat, serene effect.In 1951 The Leicester Galleries hosted a one man exhibition of Algernon Newton's works and a review of the exhibition published by The Illustrated cited:'London - without Londoners: Newton's paintings of her many aspects.' 'The Surrey Canal: the picturesque yet slightly sinister beauty of the London canals has provided Newton with many subjects' The Illustrated London News, April 14 1951, p. 586Newton's original colour notes for this work still exist and are held in the Tate Archives. Newton discusses his colour choices, particularly for the sky:'Deptford. Blue sky above brilliant blue. (Brilliant gold white clouds)... Distant pale green peep of sky, warm with gold clouds soft lit warmish grey shadows. Big mass curling over top L and distant range of curling gold clouds.' Algernon Newton, TGA 749/1/8, Tate Archives While some artists, like Paul Nash, sought peace and tranquillity away from the grittiness of urban life after the First World War, Newton turned his attention to depicting London in new and imaginative ways. He was particularly drawn to the canal network within the urban landscape. Newton expressed a desire to connect with the lives of London's poorest residents by portraying their daily surroundings without the need to depict the figures themselves, focusing instead on the desolate yet poignant landscapes they inhabited. The present lot is an ambitious example from this canal series painted in 1950. The work was last seen in public in 1980 when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy and has been in private ownership ever since.

Known only from a black and white photograph and a preliminary sketch in the Tate Gallery archives, the Artist's notebooks detail that it was believed to have been destroyed in a fire. Its re-entry into Newton's oeuvre brings to the fore a concern in his work which has previously not been so overt. As a celebrated painter of dramatic and unpopulated cityscapes, especially of London, St Paul's Rising out of the Fog could be viewed as a rather typical painting for Newton. Yet its iconic subject, and the associated connotations in the immediate post-war years, set this canvas apart from Newton's more commonplace compositions. For his London scenes Newton usually favoured the then quiet and undeveloped areas of Bayswater, Paddington and the industrial landscapes along the Regent's Canal. Certainly, these cityscapes dating to the 1940s and 50s display a more sombre tone than those of the 1920s and 30s and Andrew Graham-Dixon remarks that in the later works 'war was surely there too...painted even as they were several years after the end of the conflict. It is there as absence, silence, shadow' (exh.cat., Andrew Graham-Dixon, The Peculiarity of Algernon Newton, Daniel Katz Gallery, 2012, p.10). Yet this reading of the work is subtle and subjective. It is the case that Newton, who was a committed pacifist, found that war occupied his thoughts deeply for some time following 1945. He drafted two short stories (never published) which presented events of the Second World War in alternative realities but these were to be kept private. St Paul's Rising out of the Fog can be seen as a much more public declaration of how the war had played on his mind.Between 1940 and 1941 London was bombarded by the Luftwaffe, with great swathes of the city reduced to rubble. Conscious that the city needed hope amidst the Blitz, Sir Winston Churchill declared that "at all costs, St Paul's must be saved". Although twenty-nine incendiary bombs fell on and around the cathedral, a concerted effort by a dedicated team of firewatchers meant that whilst almost every building around the site burned to the ground the famous dome defiantly stood proud. On the night of the 29th of December 1940 photographer Herbert Mason captured an image of the cathedral, illuminated by the fires and surrounded by smoke, which is now known as St Paul's Survives. The photo was printed on the front cover of the Daily Mail on New Year's Eve and became immediately famous. It has since become a symbol of British resilience and courage, and is considered one of the most iconic images of the Blitz.It is surely an image that Newton would have been familiar with and the parallels in composition between St Paul's Survives and St Paul's Rising out of the Fog are numerous. Although no direct reference is made to the image in the Artist's notes, it is most plausible that the photograph would have entered Newton's mind as the painting was being conceived. Showing the cathedral almost a decade on from the Blitz, Newton paints London smog and heavy cloud in place of the thick black ground smoke and billowing plumes of Mason's photograph. The surrounding buildings have been rebuilt, but are dissolved by Newton in a hazy fog recalling their once derelict state. Dramatic illumination from the blazing fires of the photograph has given way to a low, late evening light which draws focus to the ball and cross atop the dome against a peaceful blue, rather than the blackened and scorched night sky. • Algernon Newton, RA (1880-1968) Country House signed with in initials and dated l.r.: AN/23 watercolour 26.5 cm by 35.3 cm;10 1/2 in by 14 in Provenance acquired by the previous owners at Abbott & Holder in Barnes (c.late 1960s) The present watercolour relates to a larger oil (26 by 36 inches) reproduced in Newton's photographic record of his own work now in the Tate Archive (no.41, Vol.I). That painting depicts the same house although from a different angle and is likewise unidentified (referred to as "A Country House" then crossed out and replaced with the phrase "A Conversation Piece"). The architecture possibly suggests a house in the Midlands, perhaps in Worcestershire or Shropshire. Like Newton's imposing oils, this watercolour still possesses something of the strange stillness that characterises those works. We are grateful for Henry Potts for providing his research on the present picture.

§ Algernon Newton, RA (British 1880-1968) Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland signed with monogram and dated '30 lower right oil on canvas, in a maple frame h:60 w:90 cm Provenance: Commissioned for the offices of Shell BP at Shellmex House, The Strand, London; A gift to the vendor's father in the 1950s from Shell BP for whom he worked for some forty years and by descent Algernon Newton was one of the most interesting and compellingly original English artists of the neo-Romantic 20th century British painters The grandson of one of Winsor & Newton art materials original founders Henry Newton, he left university at Cambridge without a degree to attend a variety of art colleges in London including the School of Animal Painting in Kensington. After serving a short time as Sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserve (1916), Newton began exhibiting works at the Royal Academy and the New English Art Clubs in the 1920s. In 1936 he became elected as an ARA (Associate Royal Academian), and was elected fully into the Royal Academy of Arts in 1943. During the Thirties, Newton became a pacifist, remembering the trauma of war and he moved to the country, painting dark sylvan scenes often with a sense of dread in the skies, thundery landscapes and forbidding trees. The present illustration of Bamburgh Castle displays Newton's famed style of creating a solitary atmosphere tainted with a sense of unease and the surreal. Newton dedicated his last decade of work to landscapes which are the feature in a number of leading galleries at present, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. In 2012 Daniel Katz staged an exhibition titled The Peculiarity of Algernon Newton which featured the artist's work during the 1930s-40s.
