    Luciano Nezzo, Badia Polesine 1856 - Urbino 1903 (Badia Polesine 1856 - Urbino 1903) - - Luciano Nezzo was an Italian painter, known for painting historical and genre subjects. His genre subjects are often poignant and dramatic.Born in the Province of Rovigo, Veneto, he showed an early inclination for the arts. His first local master was Marco Vallerini. A local patron financed his education at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, where he studied for ten years. By the time he was 20, he had won a gold medal for his composition, The Badger at the Bedside of Eleonora d'Este and Leonardo da Vinci Painting the Madonna Lisa.He left the Academy to enlist as a soldier in the Italian War of Independence. Assigned to the 41st regiment in Milan, he enrolled in the Brera Academy. Returning to the Veneto region, he obtained a professorship in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino. Among the two paintings sent to the 1887 Rovigo Exposition, which earned him a silver medal, were Portrait of King Umberto and Invited to Lunch. His other works include: Alla finestra (1884, Turin Exposition); Buon giorno (1883, Rome Exposition); Mastro Piero; Il ladro, Rebecca, and numerous portraits. Some of his subjects are reminiscent of the tense episodes painted by Gaspare Traversi; for example, his painting of an elderly dentist examining the mouth of his young patient while hiding his tooth extractor behind his back.
