PERRY NICHOLS (1911-1992) Mary Nell, 1936 Fresco 14.5in. x 13in. Signed verso Perry Nichols, one of the original Dallas Nine, grew up in the 1920s. During high school he showed a strong aptitude toward art. He studied under Eleanor Benners and later with Frank Reaugh, Alexandre Hogue, and Peter Hurd. During the 1930s, Nichols identified himself with the growing Regionalist Movement in American art. As were other Dallas artists, Nichols was influenced by the Italian primitive quattrocentro painters. Along with this influence was an interest in the resurgence of Renaissance techniques such as fresco and egg tempera. Nichols received instruction in these media from Peter Hurd of New Mexico, who was the acknowledged American master at egg tempera and fresco. This hangable fresco was a strong statement by Perry Nichols of his belief in Renaissance methods. This painting was his entry in the 1936 Texas Centennial. It is considered the most important Nichols painting not already in a museum. A wonderful artist-designed and painted frame completes the Renaissance tradition of high craftsmanship and complete artistic control over the creative process. While damaged, the damage is not by "inherent vice." The surface is stable and no observable flaking or indication of surface deterioration is evident. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a rare 1936 Texas Centennial painting. Provenance: Estate of Perry Nichols Exhibited: 1936 Texas Centennial, Fair Park, Dallas, Texas 11th Annual Allied Arts Exhibition, 1940, Dallas Museum of Art

PERRY NICHOLS (1911-1992) Wild Boar Hog Egg tempera with sgraffito 18in. x 24in. Signed lower right Signed and titled verso Perry Nichols was a master of many media, including pastel, watercolor, oil, egg tempera, fresco, gouache, and acrylic. In addition, he was an accomplished woodworker and furniture designer. Few of the Texas artists were adept in the medium of egg tempera. Nichols learned from Peter Hurd of New Mexico, one of the American masters in the medium. This painting uses the sgraffito technique where the top layer of color is "scratched" to reveal the color beneath. The hand-painted and carved period frame is believed to be by Perry Nichols and original to the painting.
