        Joseph Paul Nickel (1946 - 2008) Treasure Hunter Mixed Media Collage on Board. Joseph Paul Nickel was born in 1946 in Orange, New Jersey. In his youth he worked as a singer and tap dancer before serving in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He also served in the Merchant Marines. He spent the last 45 years of his life in the Roosevelt section of Millstone Township, N.J. Apparently, not long after he started creating art, he began using the pseudonym “Welsh” for reasons that remain unclear. “Welsh” or “W” is the manner in which he almost exclusively signed his work. He was known to everyone as Paul, choosing to omit the appellation Joseph, probably because he was Joseph Jr. and wanted more individuality. Nickel used found objects, cardboard and wood as well as oils and watercolor to produce at a fairly prolific pace. His subjects range from landscapes to historical types and themes to Americana to the macabre to still lives, or to anything that occurred to his psyche or to chance on a particular day.
