Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825-1904) Going to Market: River Landscape with Figures in a boat, near Derryavaragh, County Westmeath Oil on canvas 32 x 53cm (12½ x 20¾“) Signed ‘ E.Nicol ARSA and dated (18) '57 As dawn breaks, a group of travellers moves slowly in a rather overladen boat, propelled by a single oarsman, along one of the waterways of the extended Shannon basin between Castlepollard and Mullingar, perhaps the River Inny. This was a part of Ireland that Nicol knew intimately. Having established a studio in the vicinity of Lough Derravaragh, he made the landscape and people of the Bog of Allen his own. Indeed, he even named his London home Clonave Villa in honour of the location of his base on the north of Lough Derravaragh. As Dr. Brendan Rooney writes ‘The local community and surrounding Westmeath countryside inspired many of Nicol’s best and most sensitive, pictures (Art and Architecture of Ireland, vol. 2, 389). This judgment certainly applies to the carefully observed, yet quietly lyrical, scene depicted here. In this work dated 1857, when the artist was thirty-two, he imbues his figures with a quiet solemnity quite at odds with the occasional stage Irish tendency to which later in his career Nicol occasionally succumbed. The generally ochre palette is enlivened with a few chromatic highlights, notably the flecks of red strategically positioned though the composition. For a quite different, though clearly related, composition of the same year, titled by the artist, Market Day, Derryavaragh, Co. Westmeath, see Adam’s, Important Irish Art 6 Dec, 2023, lot 71 and for the Bog at Derryavaragh see Adam’s, Important Irish Art, April 2014 lot 101.

Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825-1904) Waiting For A Bite (1866) oil on canvas signed and dated 'A. Nicol 1866' lower right h:100  w:76.20 cm. Provenance: Gorry Gallery, Dublin where purchased by the present owner Exhibited: Gorry Gallery, Dublin, 'An Exhibition of 18th-21st Century Irish Paintings' 1st-19th November 2021 No.20 (illustrated on p.18) In this, one of the finest example of Erskine Nicol's genre paintings, a fisherman is about to set out on a lake boat for a day's fishing. The man's expression is bright, and he is evidently looking forward to the adventures that lie ahead. In one hand he holds a fishing rod with a brass reel, while in the other, his food for the day is wrapped in a small woven straw basket, designed to keep its contents-potatoes perhaps-warm for several hours. The painting is characterized by a sense of observed authentic detail, including the design of the boat, which has been repaired several times, and the tattered but respectable garb of the fisherman; white shirt, red neckerchief, blue waistcoat, overcoat, moleskin trousers and gaiters. In his right hand he holds a fishing rod, and in his left hand the small basket. Nicol employed this sitter on several occasions, as a model for his Irish scenes, including paintings such as Midday Meal, Pat Among the Old Masters and Bashful Suitor. Dr. Amélie Dochy-Jacquard, of the University of Toulouse, who has carried out detailed research on Nicol, speculates that the sitter may be Paddy Cox, a neighbour who lived near Clonava in Co. Westmeath. Nicol built a studio at Clonava, beside Derravaragh Lake, where he painted during his visits to Ireland. Whatever the identity of the sitter, Nicol portrays the man almost as lord of his domain, with the fishing rod standing for a sceptre, while the circular basket represents the orb. Although there may be an element of gentle mockery in this, the painting is a sincere homage to the art of fly-fishing. With clouds gathering overhead, blocking out the sun, it is a perfect day for fishing, and the artist has tried to encapsulate the pleasure felt in a time-honoured country pursuit. There are several paintings by Nicol of fisherman, and it is clear his preference was for portraying fly fishing. Another version of Waiting for a Bite exists, and is entitled The Optimistic Angler (sold at Christies, May 2005). Although the main market for these paintings was in Edinburgh and London, where they would have attracted the attention of people who went on fishing trips to Ireland and Scotland, Nicol's work was also popular with collectors in the United States. Born in 1825 in Leith, Scotland, Erskine Nicol was initially apprenticed to a house painter, before studying art at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh, where his teachers included Thomas Duncan and William Allen. For a short time, he was employed as a drawing master at Leith Academy. Moving to Dublin in 1845, he worked for four years as a teacher with the Department of Science and Art, and also painted portraits. He specialized thereafter in Irish subject matter, particularly scenes of everyday life in the country. In paintings such as The Emigrants (1864) he depicted the harsher realities of life. Nicol was a Realist painter; rarely sentimentalising his subjects. In 1850 he returned to Edinburgh, and the following year was elected an associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy. However, following the example of his compatriot David Wilkie, who had travelled in Ireland in the 1830s, Nicol continued to make painting trips to Clonava. The sketches he made in Ireland were then worked up into finished paintings on his return to Scotland. In 1862 Nicol moved to London and six years later was made an Associate of the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the RHA. Sixteen paintings by him were used as illustration in the 1909 book Tales of Irish Life and Character. Peter Murray, March 2023

Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825-1904) The Visit of the Mother in Law (1860)

    Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Erskine Nicol RSA ARA (1825-1904) The Visit of the Mother in Law (1860) oil on canvas signed lower left and dated (18)'60 h:33.10  w:46.70 cm. Provenance: Dominion Gallery, Montreal (label verso); Gorry Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection Originally from Leith in Scotland, Nicol is one of the best known, and most prolific genre and figure painters to have worked in rural Ireland, in the mid to late nineteenth century. He exhibited many Irish titles in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Liverpool as well as at the Royal Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. He also painted Scottish genre subjects, but his Irish paintings are easy to differentiate, because of his careful attention to authentic detail and his inclusion of objects and costume, typical of Irish farmhouses and cabins. Indeed, his paintings are a colourful reminder of precisely how working peoples' homes were arranged and furnished. This work, like many of his others, presents his three characters as if on a stage, as a conversation piece, inviting his audience to explore, examine and unravel various narratives. Frequently marital bliss, or strife, provided the focus for his scenes, so in common with other titles, such as "Phew ! Caught Again! (1858)". The visit of the mother in law suggests an interruption to young married life . The husband turns his back on the scene and is departing past the ' jamb wall' screening the hearth from draughts, and out into the sunshine. The wattle smoke canopy over the hearth, supported on a strong horizontal ' brace tree' (which sometimes incorporating small lofts) , is deliberately denuded by Nicol here, using artist's license to allow light from the chimney above to illuminate the scene. This hearth type predominated in the east and south of Ireland . An earthen floor is strewn with domestic paraphernalia the tongs by the turf fire, the black-glazed earthenware pitcher, and other glazed jugs for fetching well water, and the ubiquitous round potato basket, used to bring the crop in from the fields. Clothes and baskets, and the scattered peelings on the unswept floor, provide evidence for an altercation. The 'woman of the house' stands in defiant contemplation, her back to the disgruntled subject of the title; the mother-in-law, who sits angrily behind her. The arrangement of objects he retells us so much about the people involved; the older woman is in the traditional place of honour closest to the hearth, beside her a low table has been set with an earthenware crock, teacups and a teapot, and a white cloth in readiness for her arrival.
