A Russian icon with Saint Nicola the Thaumaturge

tempera on panel depicting St. Nicholas in the centre in episcopal robes, holding the Gospel Book in his left hand and with his right hand making the blessing gesture, presented according to the typical depiction of the Russian Orthodox Church in the cult of the Saint. On his left is the icon of Jesus Christ and on his right that of the Virgin Mary. The Saint is surrounded by 12 scenes depicting salient episodes of his life, from his birth to his death, which led to his beatification. Saint Nicholas the Thaumaturge is the most beloved and revered saint of Russia and one of the most popular in Christianity. The exceptional cult is supported by a very rich hagiographic literature; from birth the saint observed the fasts imposed by Orthodox rule. It is said that he, while still an infant, stood perfectly upright. As an adult, having received a substantial inheritance from his parents, he distributed it to the poor. Particularly popular is the legend that a man, having fallen into poverty to the point of wanting to make meretricians of his three daughters, was saved by the saint who threw three bags containing gold out of his window.

A fine Roman-style flintlock pistol by D. Nicola Palombini D'Acquasanta

dating: Third quarter of the 18th Century provenance: Central Italy, Smoothbore, two-stage, 12.5 mm cal. barrel, with mark of a horse between lilies at the first part and with engraved elements at the ends, then round after rings. Engraved tang. Roman-style lock engraved with a figure with a flintlock pistol and floral motifs, inside signed 'D. Nicola Palombini D'Acquasanta'. Wooden full stock with gilt bronze mounts, decorations in relief. Some areas damaged by superficial rust. Horn-tipped wooden ramrod with iron cartridge extractors. length 40 cm.

A beautiful pair of miquelet flintlock pistols by Nicola Salvatore

dating: 1770/80 provenance: Naples, Smoothbore, two-stage, 17 mm cal. barrels, octagonal at the first part with marks of the Royal Factory of Naples among nine, gold-inlaid lilies, then a ring, round acanthus leaves and moulded muzzle; tang richly engraved. Very elegant locks with mark 'NS' (for Salvatore Nicola, Torre Annunziata and Naples) under gold-inlaid crown, finely carved and engraved with floral motifs. Wooden, full stocks with fine silver mounts engraved with floral motifs and with openwork counterplates. On the back, oval badge bearing a fleur-de-lis under crown. Beautiful pair of pistols probably belonged to a personage of the court of Naples or a gift to a high official.For Nicola Salvatore see 'Der Neue Stöckel', vol. II, page 1102. length 26 cm.
