Numbered, signed, with stamps of the Esfinge Foundry and Diejasa Edition. Attached certificate issued by Nicolas Descharnes in 2014 which in turn contains the certificate previously made by his father, Robert Descharnes in 2003. This is a limited reissue of 6 pieces from the Clot Collection. Measurements: 233 x 85 cm. The "Venus of the Tires" is a bronze of considerable proportions. As the title warns, it represents a female nude with two tires: one serves as a base and the other surrounds her waist as if it were a float. The woman adopts a Greek-inspired contrapposto, which also recalls some Renaissance models borrowed from Antiquity (such as Botticelli or Donatello). It was a common strategy in Dalí's work: the rereading of Greco-Roman splendor in a surrealist key, the transfiguration of the Venus with the inclusion of drawers or transforming their human heads into fish heads. Here we are before a new version of the goddess of love and sensuality, which on this occasion leads us to think about subconscious issues linked to the state of "floating", dreams, lightness, weightlessness, rescue or the sinking of reason. This sculpture comes from Isidro Clot's sculpture collection. The collection was initially conceived in the summer of 1971 in Port Lligat, where an elderly Dalí, but still with plenty of creative enthusiasm, began to sculpt a series of wax sculptures. The figures were modeled under the hot Mediterranean sun, which made the wax soft and malleable, leaving the delicate fingers of the master from Figueras marked on the surface. In his book "Dalí: The Hard and the Soft Spells for the Magic of Form: Sculptures and Objects", Robert Descharnes, a friend and renowned expert on Dalí, describes the process of creating the sculptures. In 1973, 44 sculptures made so far were cast in bronze by his friend Isidro Clot, who ran the Diejasa foundry together with his son-in-law Adrián Campos. The casting process was closely followed by Dalí, a very important aspect that makes the piece in bidding an original of the genius of Port Lligat. The work we present is part of a limited reedition of six pieces from the Clot Collection, cast in the Diejasa company. To the same series belong: "Reloj blando", "Cisne-elefante", "Doble Victoria de Samotracia", "Geminis".The sculptures that make up the Clot collection reflect Dalí's maturity and distorted classicism, in such a way that they define the themes that disturbed and aroused the curiosity of the surrealist master throughout his life: Ancient Greece, eroticism, psychism, his relationship with Gala, playfulness, Christian iconography... and the paranoiac-critical transfiguration of all these references.

This is a limited reissue of 6 pieces from the Clot Collection. Measurements: 235 x 98 x 59 cm. The melted clock motif has probably been the most praised of Dalí's host of surrealist objects. In the painting "The Persistence of Memory" (1931), the soft clocks slipped from their supports and slid through an arid terrain of metaphysical cadences. The sculptural clock shown here was conceived by Dalí some forty years later. The green patinated bronze seems to melt like a liquid gem, suggesting to us that linear and objective time does not exist, but that it is malleable and subjective, playful and elastic like this clock whose dial and Arabic numerals are elongated and distorted by the effect of gravity. Dalí, a great reader of Freud, supported the Freudian concept of the "elasticity of psychic time" (that of memory and dreams) and managed to give it a unique visual form. It should also be noted that Dalí's works with melted clocks contain an underlying critique of the rigidity of time in modern society, where people are often dominated by the clock and the concept of linear time. The masked face on each panel is modeled in mixed media relief. Each is presented in a walnut frame that measures 50 1/2" x 38 1/2", and each weighs about 60 lbs. Bill Morgan offers more context on the paintings: "These two pieces were originally part of Nicolasâs Masters Exhibition (1974) at ISU. At the time that I acquired them, they were Dead Dogs and The Mountain part of his image storehouse in the mid-70âs. But a little over a decade later, Nicolas had new things to say and new imagery to say it. So, when some minor problems developed along the edges of the plaster on these two pieces, he offered to paint over the dogs & mountain with up-to-date imagery: Laughing Man and Crying Man. "These performing figures show up in many of Nicolasâs works of the mid-1980s. As I see them, the two paintings work together to remind viewers of the difficulty of achieving authentic feelingâperhaps even the impossibility of getting to authentic feeling because of the interference of our habitual crutch of performance." Provenance: From the Bill & Ellen Morgan collection. Bill Morgan is a professor emeritus of English at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. It was there that he befriended Nicolas Africano, and he quickly became a patron and collector of the Africano's work as well; for a time Morgan rented Africano a room, occasionally accepting artwork in lieu of payment. This far-reaching collection from an early adopter gives a unique opportunity to access rare early works and get an expansive view of the artist during several pivotal moments in his journey. For this sculpture, Salvador Dalí was inspired by Freud's reading of "Gradiva. A Pompeian Fantasy", a work by Wilhelm Jensen written in 1907 and translated into French in 1931. In Jensen's story, the young archaeologist Norbert Hanold becomes obsessed with Gradiva, a female figure he has seen in a classical relief. Dressed in a tunic, Gradiva appears to him on three occasions: at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in Pompeii and when he visits the ruins of this ancient Italian city. Salvador Dalí, like the rest of the Surrealists, championed Gradiva as his heroine and personified her in Gala, his muse par excellence, christening her Gala-Gradiva. In this sculpture, Gala-Gradiva, who appears ethereal, slender and vaporous, seems to fly over a bridge in the shape of a clepsydra. It is a personification of Jensen's account of Freud, a sculpture charged with deep symbolism and emotional value for the surrealist genius. During his early years, Dalí discovered contemporary painting during a family visit to Cadaqués, where he met the family of Ramon Pichot, an artist who travelled regularly to Paris. Following Pichot's advice, Dalí began to study painting with Juan Núñez. In 1922, Dalí stayed at the famous Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid to begin studying Fine Arts at the San Fernando Academy. However, before his final exams in 1926, he was expelled for claiming that there was no one there fit to examine him. That same year Dalí travelled to Paris for the first time. There he met Picasso, and established certain formal characteristics that would become distinctive of all his work from then on. His language absorbed the influences of many artistic styles, from classical academicism to the most groundbreaking avant-garde. At that time, the painter grew an eye-catching moustache in imitation of Velázquez's, which was to become his personal trademark for the rest of his life. In 1929, Dalí collaborated with Luis Buñuel in the making of "An Andalusian Dog", which depicted scenes typical of the surrealist imaginary. In August of the same year he met his muse and future wife Gala. During this period Dalí held regular exhibitions in both Barcelona and Paris, and joined the Surrealist group based in the Montparnasse district of Paris. His work greatly influenced the direction of Surrealism for the next two years, and he was hailed as the originator of the paranoiac-critical method, which was said to help access the subconscious by releasing creative artistic energies. In 1931 Dalí painted one of his most famous works, The Persistence of Memory, in which, according to some theories, he illustrated his rejection of time as a rigid or deterministic entity. The painter landed in America in 1934, thanks to the art dealer Julian Levy. As a result of his first solo exhibition in New York, his international reputation was definitively consolidated and from then on he showed his work and gave lectures all over the world. That same year he was subjected to a "surrealist trial" which resulted in his expulsion from the movement, on the grounds that the painter considered that Surrealism could exist in an apolitical context, refusing to commit himself to the ideas of André Breton. To this, Dalí responded with his famous retort, "I am Surrealism". Most of his work is housed in the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueras, followed by the collection of the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg (Florida), the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Salvador Dalí Gallery in Pacific Palisades (California), the Espace Dalí in Montmartre (Paris) and the Dalí Universe in London.
