Helen Nicolay was born in Paris in 1866, while her father, John George Nicolay, was serving there as the United States Consul. Her father also served as the private secretary to Abraham Lincoln, and later wrote a definitive biography of the president. Helen was an author in her own right, writing "Lincoln's Secretary: A Biography of John G. Nicolay," "Personal Traits Of Abraham Lincoln," and several juvenile biographies of Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson and Ulysses S. Grant. Helen was not only a noted author, but a highly respected artist of her day. In 1884 she and her parents visited the Deerfield, Massachusetts, studio of artist and teacher James Champney. Helen attended summer art classes with Champney and winter classes at the Corcoran School in Washington, sketching and painting year round. She lived in the District of Columbia until her death in 1954.

        Est: $100 - $150

[ABRAHAM LINCOLN] Helen Nicolay (1866-1954) she was the spinster daughter of John G. Nicolay (1832-1901) who served as private secretary to US President Abraham Lincoln and later co-authored a biography of the 16th President. ALS, Dec. 5, 1947, 1p, 6 x 6-3/4 in. "My father was confirmed as United States Consul at Partis by the Senate before Mr. Lincoln's death, and sailed for France on June 24th 1865, returning to this country in the summer of 1869. So he was not in the United States on any January 20th while Andrew Johnson was President." In 1861, Lincoln appointed Nicolay as his private secretary, which was the first official act of his new administration. Nicolay served in this capacity until Lincoln's death in 1865. Shortly before his assassination, Lincoln appointed Nicolay to a diplomatic post in France. After the death of the President, Nicolay became United States Consul at Paris, France (1865–69). VG
