          Jun. 20, 2024

KAY NIELSEN (1886-1957) "She stopped as if to speak to him."

          Est: $7,000 - $10,000

KAY NIELSEN (1886-1957) "She stopped as if to speak to him." Study for the story, "Twelve Dancing Princesses," published in In Powder and Crinoline retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1913). Later published in America as The Twelve Dancing Princesses and Other Fairy Tales. Watercolor and bodycolor on paper. 7 1/2 x 14 5/8 inches, matted and framed to 18 1/2 x 26 3/4 inches. Signed and dated 1912 in lower left image. This illustration by the Danish illustrator Kay Nielsen exemplifies his distinctive Art Nouveau style, characterized by smooth, curving lines, elongated figures, and a flattened perspective. The artwork was made for a fairy tale about a humble villager named Michael, who dreams of marrying a princess. To fulfill his dream, Michael must uncover the secret of how the twelve princesses of Belœil escape their locked room each night to dance until dawn. Although this particular study was not included in the final publication, it shares similarities in both composition and narrative with the illustration on page 92 of the book. In that published scene, the youngest princess, Lina, sensing that Michael might have followed them, pauses to question him but ultimately continues on her way.

KAY NIELSEN (1886-1957) Portrait of Anna Larssen.

          Est: $1,000 - $1,500

KAY NIELSEN (1886-1957) Portrait of Anna Larssen. Portrait of Danish actress Anna Larssen, c. 1903-04. Pencil & red charcoal on paper. 311x235 mm; 12 1/4x9 1/4 inches (sheet), adhered to 12x16 1/2-inch paper backing. Initialed and dated "03-04 KN" in lower right image. Kay Nielsen was a Danish illustrator active in the early 20th century, during a time when Danish actress Anna Larssen (1875-1955) was at the height of her popularity. In addition to her work in the theatre, Larssen is known for her friendship with Lili Elbe: painter, trans woman, and subject of the 2015 film, The Danish Girl. Larssen is credited with giving Elbe the name, Lili, thus developing her awareness of her gender identity. In her autobiography, Elbe tells an account of that story: "About this time Grete [Sparre] painted the portrait of the then popular actress in Copenhagen, Anna Larssen. One day Anna was unable to attend the appointed sitting. On the telephone she asked Grete, who was somewhat vexed: 'Cannot Andreas pose as a model for the lower part of the picture? His legs and feet are as pretty as mine.'" When Larssen unexpectedly arrived at the studio during the sitting, she delighted in the scene and assigned her "a particularly lovely, musical name," Source: Lili. Parker, R. J. (n.d.). Inspired by Genesis i:25: 'And God made the beasts of the earth after his kind and cattle after their kind and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.' Both are impressive, with an angel rising an ox, and animals of all kinds wandering through a fantastic landscape of hills and plains. 'His work on "The First Spring" has been Kay Nielsen's opportunity to express his appreciation to his nation which has given him a welcome and freedom to paint in these tragic times. He likes to think of it as his contribution to democratic ideals in which men of goodwill in all countries believe.' (Horn Book Magazine). The mural entitled Canticle of the Sun (second work) is in the Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School, Westwood, Los Angeles. In 1939, Nielsen moved from Denmark to California to work for The Walt Disney Company. His work was used in Fantasia, and also produced concept drawings for The Little Mermaid, which were only used posthumously.

[London]: Hodder & Stoughton, [1913]. 4to. 26 color plates by Nielsen tipped onto grey stock with decorative frames, captioned tissue guards. Green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, covers with single gilt fillet border, upper cover with gilt titling, raised bands, gilt-ruled compartments, turn-ins with single gilt fillet, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt. Two leaves with short closed tear to fore margin, slight browning to edges of leaves. An attractively bound copy of Quiller-Couch's third collection of fairy tales, with illustrations by Nielsen. It appears to be a variant of the Edition De Luxe, with two more plates than the trade edition, but it is not signed by Nielsen, as the 500 copies of that edition were supposed to be. The cheeky, somewhat campy illustrations here strongly reflect the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, an artist much admired by Nielsen. An English writer and critic of Cornish descent who published under the pseudonym 'Q,' Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch is perhaps best remembered as the compiler of the monumental Oxford Book of English Verse 1250–1900. *Nielsen (Kay Rasmus, 1886-1957). 'The Nightingale - and when I go back, I hear the nightingale, sing - ', 1923, watercolour on artist's board, with traces of pencil, showing a Chinese maiden standing entranced at the foot of a willow tree beside a river, listening to the song of a nightingale, within a decorative foliate border in pencil, signed and dated in pencil to lower right border, board size 37 x 27cm (14.5 x 10.75ins), mounted, together with backboard from original frame bearing large manuscript title label in Nielsen's hand (rubbed but entirely legible), and other labels denoting provenance, including Leicester Gallery and Gillian Jason Gallery labels Provenance: Purchased by Lady Headley from the Leicester Galleries, London, in 1924 (Exhibition of Kay Nielsen Drawings, February-March 1924, No.5); in the possession of Beryl Fiona Roberts in 1977; purchased by Benny Lee from the Gillian Jason Gallery, London, in 1987; from thence by descent to his niece, the current vendor. Danish artist Kay Nielsen is one of the greatest illustrators of the golden age of book design and illustration in the first half of the twentieth century. Nielsen produced this original watercolour as an illustration for 'The Nightingale', one of the stories in an edition of "Fairy Tales" by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1924. The delicate and luminous qualities of his best work is arguably nowhere better seen than in this exquisitely drawn picture. 'Nattergalen', first published in 1843, tells of the Emperor of China's preference for the tinkling of a bejewelled mechanical bird over the song of a real nightingale, which flies away and is banished from the land. When the Emperor is near death, the nightingale returns, and his song restores the Emperor to health. Well received upon its publication, the tale is believed to have been inspired by the author's unrequited love for opera singer Johanna Maria Lind (1820-1887), better known as Jenny Lind, and in turn was the inspiration for her nickname, the 'Swedish Nightingale'. The story has been adapted for opera, ballet, musicals, television dramas and films. Barbara Janet Ainsleigh Baynton, Lady Headley (1857-1929) was an Australian writer, most noted for her short stories 'Bush Studies'. She married three times and her second husband left his entire estate to her, enabling her to invest in the stock and art market, buy and sell antiques, and collect black opals. During World War I Mrs. Baynton was living in England and in 1921 she married her third husband Rowland George Allanson Allanson-Winn, 5th Baron Headley (1855-1935). Baron Headley, an Irish peer and prominent convert to Islam, was also known as Shaikh Rahmatullah al-Farooq. He was one of the leading members of the Woking Muslim Mission, and presided for a time over the British Muslim Society. In 1921 he married Barbara Baynton, becoming bankrupt the following year. He was offered the throne of Albania in 1925, along with $500,000 and $50,000 per year, an offer he refused, upon which Lady Headley returned to Melbourne, where she died in 1929. Benny Lee was a prominent film lighting engineer who worked with, amongst others, director, producer and screenwriter Sir Alan Parker, whose credits include 'Bugsy Malone', 'Evita' and 'Fame'. In 1961 he established Lee Electric (Lighting) Ltd with his brother John Lee. In 1987 Lee International PLC, as it had become, announced that it had made an offer of $100 million for Panavision, the Hollywood manufacturer and rental company for motion picture cameras and lenses. A highly desirable piece by Kay Nielsen, with a fascinating provenance which starts with the work's first owner the year following its creation. (1) Artist's Resale Right ("Droit de Suite"). Artist's Resale Right Regulations 2006 apply to this lot, the buyer agrees to pay us an amount equal to the resale royalty provided for in those Regulations, and we undertake to the buyer to pay such amount to the artist's collection agent.
