      Netsuke, wood. Japan, 19th cent. Unusual work with perfect carving work, masterfully executed in every detail! Literally, nio means the “two kings”. They are gigantic, muscular wardens of temple gates. In this netsuke, they sit on a large waraji and compete in the sport of udeoshi or arm wrestling. Despite the tiny size of the piece, their faces are expressive and typical for the nio, who put the fear of the gods into the demons. The eyes are inlaid. On the bottom is the sandal’s lacing and, on a curved bridge which serves to hold the lace, the signature NOBU-KAZU to 信 一 刀.       woodblock print (triptych), 34 x 69.5cm, At the centre right on the raised dais, stands the figure of Emperor Meiji, holding the constitution, while the Empress is on the other dais, flanked by her ladies in waiting. She is positioned beneath the clock, a symbol of modernity. At the centre right stands the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal and other officials, and facing them, with their backs to the viewer, are important officials from foreign countries. Imperial princes are to their left. At bottom left, with their backs to the viewer, stand high ranging cabinet officials. More Imperial Princes are positioned at the centre left.

      woodblock print (triptych), 33 x 70.5cm, Here Emperor and Empress Meiji are depicted in their state carriage outside the Imperial Palace. The carriage is decorated with a phoenix, an important symbol in Japanese culture. It is said that the phoenix only appears at the birth of a virtuous ruler. Unsurprisingly, Emperor Meiji was keen to emphasise his connection with this auspicious mythical bird.
