Jesus Helmet (rainbow) #40909 Indistinctly signed in Korean, signed, titled and dated 2004 on the inside Sequins, polyester resin and fibreglass, H. 36.6 cm Provenance: - Gallery HYUNDAI, Seoul (2005) (incl. copy of certificate) - Private collection, the Netherlands N.B.: Noh Sang-Kyoon constructs dazzling sculptures, the colourful sequins in his works symbolise hope. The use of this material stems from a near-death experience of the artist: at a young age he nearly drowned and sequins remind him of the scales of the fish that gave him the strength to keep swimming upwards. The mysterious effect of the sculpture is reinforced by the depiction of religious figures such as Buddha and Jesus Christ. The works are made with the utmost concentration, the sequins are placed in an endless circular repetition, start and finish can no longer be determined. His works offer the experience of cognitive hope, reflected in a rhythmic visual illusion.

        B. 1958 THE GLOVE OF BUDDHA 29 by 16 7/8 by 9 1/2 in. 74 by 42.8 by 24 cm signed on bottom polyester resin, fiberglass and sequins Executed in 2003. NOTE The Glove of Buddha is based on a Buddhist hand gesture that signifies protection. By wrapping this religiously charged hand sculpture with inexpensive and highly ornamental adornments, Noh Sang-Kyoon releases the sculpture from the religious realm, lending it an air of pop culture or nostalgic fondness. Sequins have been Noh's primary motif since 1992; he originally used them to represent fish scales, as a statement about death and anonymity inspired by his own experience of near-drowning as a child.
