August Norieri (American/Louisiana, 1860-1898), "Sailing on Lake Pontchartrain"

      Est: $1,500 - $2,500

August Norieri (American/Louisiana, 1860-1898) "Sailing on Lake Pontchartrain" oil on canvas signed lower right. Period frame. 22" x 27", 29-1/2" x 34-1/2" Notes: Born into a middle class New Orleans Italian-American family, August Norieri's brother Baptiste worked as a tugboat captain and bar pilot on the Mississippi River. Evidently, the artist became well acquainted with the variety of boats that traversed the waterways of New Orleans through his brother. Norieri studied painting with prominent local artist Andre Molinary, participated in the Creole Exhibit of the American Exposition of 1885 and was a member of the Art Association of New Orleans. The painting depicts a sailboat on a windy day with full sails crossing the rough seas of Lake Pontchartrain.

August Norieri (American/Louisiana, 1860-1898), "Two Sharecroppers", 1891, oil on academy board, signed and dated lower right, collector labels on previous backing paper, 12 1/4 in. x 9 3/8 in., framed. Provenance: Dr. and Mrs. James W. Nelson Collection. Exh.: "August Norieri, 1860-1938", Louisiana State Museum, New Orleans, Sept. 21-Oct. 18, 1970, and listed in the accompanying catalogue, no. 40, p. 28. Note: August Norieri spent his relatively short career painting primarily marine scenes and, most notably, the elaborate steamboats or “floating palaces” that were quickly becoming obsolete with the expansion of rail transportation. The rare painting offered here is a remarkable example of a departure from Norieri’s typical marine genre. This work, perhaps inspired by that of William Aiken Walker who lived and worked in New Orleans concurrently, sensitively portrays two figures at the forefront of a cotton field. Ref.: Dobie, Ann. August Norieri (American/New Orleans, 1860-1898) "Along Lake Pontchartrain", 1897 oil on linen signed and dated lower right. Framed. 18-1/8" x 30-1/8", framed 24" x 36" Provenance: Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana; by descent in the family. Notes: Born into a middle class New Orleans Italian-American family, August Norieri merged his fascination with the boats and life along the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain with his talent as an artist. His brother Baptiste worked as a tugboat captain and a bar pilot, and provided the artist with insight into the waterways of southern Louisiana. In 1880, Norieri began his studies with the local artist Andres Molinary, who was known for his landscape and genre paintings. Molinary's studio was a favorite gathering place for the local and visiting artists, and Norieri would have been a frequent guest of his mentor. Despite his untimely death in 1898 at the age of 38, Norieri had an accomplished career and exhibited with the National Academy of Design, the Art Association of New Orleans and the Creole Exhibit of the American Exposition in 1885. This charming painting "Along Lake Pontchartrain" provides a glimpse of daily life at the end of the nineteenth century with a view of sailboats in the distance as a fisherman walks with pole in hand along the shore and two men chat in the shade of the live oak tree.

August Norieri (American/Louisiana, 1860-1898), "Southern Cabin Scene", oil on canvas, monogrammed lower right, 7-1/2" x 12-1/2". Presented in a contemporary giltwood frame. Provenance: The Estate of Karolyn Kuntz Westervelt, New Orleans, Louisiana. August Norieri, a native of New Orleans, trained under Andres Molinary from 1880-1881, before setting up his own studio. From the early 1880s, he exhibited regularly with the National Academy of Design and the Artists' Association of New Orleans. Though he is best known for his Mississippi River scenes that capture the bustling maritime port at the turn of the century, Norieri was also an accomplished portraitist and genre painter. The oeuvre offered here is one of these rarities, as there are only a few known Louisiana landscapes by the artist. The cabin set amidst a clearing of pine and oak trees, from which the structure was probably hewn, is a picture window into a quiet African-American domicile; the young child plays on the porch, while the man labors beneath a covered work bench. One of the most telling features is the wattle and daub conical chimney - a remnant of African architecture that persisted in the American South, particularly the Carolina lowlands. In time, these chimneys were constructed as largely detached structures that leaned away from the home, and were often supported/propped up by sticks. In the event of a fire, these asymmetrical marvels of architecture were designed to fall away from the main structure, so as to not catch the highly flammable wooden and thatched roofs ablaze. Through Norieri's painterly attention to detail, this seemingly modest scene becomes an equally important visual record of New Orleans' architecture and heritage as the steam-powered "floating palaces" that lined the city's shores.

Norieri studied for several years with prominent local artist Andres Molinary (1847-1915) before opening his own studio which he maintained until his untimely death in 1884.
