Publication/Literature: Peintres Haïtiens, Gerald Alexis, page 48. Andre Normal was first an illustrator who joined the Centre d’Art in 1954. Normil paints works that combine moments of everyday life with investigations of biblical and historical scenes. He is one of the earliest of the mid-20th century Haitian self-taught artists to be exhibited with contemporary artists (Zurich, 1975). His work is included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince and the Milwaukee Art Museum.

    ANDRE NORMIL (1934 - 2014) Arche de Noe. Oil on masonite board, in a hand-carved wooden frame, circa 1967. 502x610 mm; 19 3/4x24 inches. Signed in oil, lower right. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Toronto (1967). On the verso are many printed clippings about the artist pasted to the board by the collector. This colorful, busy scene of Noah's Ark was a popular subject for this well known Haitian painter. Born in 1934 in Port-au-Price, Normil was a self-taught artist. He began showing his work at the age of seventeen at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince, and developed a large international following. He is best known for such large, crowded scenes, including carnivals, weddings and markets, all filled with people and animals.
