      Jun. 18, 2015

Benjamin Cam Norton (British, 1835-1900) - The travelling stallion with his horseman at Rampton Manor, Cambridgeshire signed and dated

      Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Benjamin Cam Norton (British, 1835-1900) The travelling stallion with his horseman at Rampton Manor, Cambridgeshire signed and dated lower right "B Cam Norton 1885" oil on canvas h:80 w: 105 cm The travelling stallion was a familiar sight on farms around the countryside until probably the 1950s. There is one tale of a horseman's visit with the stallion resulting in 11 foals and 13 children the following year, and the horseman was changed on a yearly basis to try and prevent the extra (human) pregnancies ! If the mare did not get in foal a free service was offered the following year. The season for serving mares was from April to July and the route of the stallion would be advertised in the local paper. A stallion and his horseman would walk about ten to fifteen miles a day, and the stallion would serve eight to ten mares a day. Stallion men were given a card of conduct by their employers "Keep away from Public Houses, Look after your horse first, Get him settled first, Get to bed early". Often the stallion would be taken to stand in the market so that farmers could come and look at him, and a card would say "He has proved himself a sure foal-getter and a sire of many prize winners". Rampton Manor, Rampton, Cambridgeshire, was owned by Charles Edward Ivatt who joined the English Cart Horse Society in February 1880, becoming a life member in 1885 of the Shire Horse Society, and he continued as a member until 1933. Ivatt remained at Rampton Manor until 1914 when he moved to St Mary's Green, Ely, Cambridgeshire. Charles Ivatt bred, bought, showed and sold heavy horses from the early 1870s. In 1878 he bred a Shire colt "Knight of the Shire" (2448) which as a foal took second prize at both Cambridge and St Neots in that year, before being sold to America. One of Ivatt's mares "Cloddy" foaled in 1880 and took third at the great London Cart Horse Show in 1882, as well as second at Braintree and Newmarket. In 1885 he registered three Shire mares with the Rampton prefix, and in 1889 he registered a further thirteen, and ten stallions. In 1882 Ivatt bred a chestnut stallion with a white face "Paleface" (3245) - who won first prize at Ely as one of a pair. The sire was "Prince" (2480) and the dam "Jewel" by "Matchless". This would have made "Paleface" a three year old in 1885, around the age when stallions started travelling. It is possible that "Paleface" is the stallion in the present painting.

Benjamin Cam Norton (1835-1900) - Family Portrait on the Derbyshire Moors - signed lower right "B Cam Norton 1872"

      Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Benjamin Cam Norton (British, 1835-1900) Family Portrait on the Derbyshire Moors, possibly the Norton Family signed lower right "B Cam Norton 1862" oil on canvas h:88 w:124 cm Provenance: From the collection of Sir Timothy Clifford. Literature: Country Life, July 2012 (illus.). Other Notes: Benjamin Cam Norton was a sporting artist. Cam Norton acquired many private patrons in the north of England and the Midlands; he painted their horses, prize cattle and occasionally their families. Cam Norton lived and worked in Newmarket for many years - his home was Cotswold Villa on Stanley Road in Newmarket. Benjamin Cam Norton is best known as a prolific and successful painter of racehorses at Doncaster, Cheltenham, Liverpool and Newmarket in the 1870s and 1880s. However, as a young man his range was wider, painting prize cattle, dogs, portraits and subject pictures. Professor Lamb's Dictionary of Yorkshire Artists gives rather inadequate information about this intriguing and distinctive artist. Cam Norton married at the age of 26 on 17 December 1860 Eliza Nowill, aged 21, at the Apostolic Church, Victoria Street, Sheffield. His father, John Norton, is described in the 1851 Census as a "Perfumer and Printseller", whilst hers was a "Merchant" of Barker Nook, Ecclesall, Bierlow. In the 1851 Census Cam Norton was 16 years old, and was a pupil of Jerome Goodrich, a portrait painter, at Carlisle Street in the Strand, London. Lucy Katherine, their first child, was born on 4 December 1871 at Ecclesall, Bierlow. The 1860 Census and 1861 Trade Directory show that Cam Norton, Artist, was living with Henry Norton (aged 49), "hairdresser and perfumer" of Norfolk Street, Sheffield. His first recorded picture was a religious copy painted in Sheffield in 1853. In 1857 Cam Norton enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools, giving his age as 18 (he was in fact 23). In 1862 he exhibited at the British Institution (address: Barker Nook, Sheffield): 169 Shades of Evening, Waiting for the Drover (30gns); and 291 The Random Shot (12gns). In 1869 he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy (address: 5 Regent Street, Cheltenham) 181 My Katie, 310 The River Rother, Sussex . By the 1881 Census he was living at 7 Bath Place, Cheltenham with his wife, his daughter Kate and son George Clarence. Cam Norton died at Gainsborough Villa, Rock Road, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, on New Year's Day 1900, aged 65. According to his will, dated 27 May 1899, he left his house and remaining pictures to his son. Benjamin Cam Norton's early realistic landscapes show a marked debt to the Pre-Raphaelites and this style may have come from an association with John Ruskin or a friendship with Elizabeth Siddal, a Sheffield girl. It has been suggested that the male sitter in this group portrait (probably the artist's masterpiece), sports a gold hunting horn pin in his stock suggesting an association with hunting, but this also may well be a watch chain with a seal at the end. The countryside in the present portrait looks very like the hills about Hathersage, Derbyshire, with the Sheffield Road to Owler's Bar in view. There were two families from Sheffield settled in the area in 1862: the Cammells of Broookfield Lodge (who had only one daughter, however) and the Firths of Birchfield Lodge (who had three). The children may be making a garland for Derbyshire well dressing. A local art historian writes: "My immediate observation is that it is a family group - husband and wife at either side of the painting, their small daughter with hair in ringlets and the grandmother in purple. Purple, trimmed in black shows that she is a widow (whether she is the husband's or the wife's mother I cannot be absolutely sure, but because of the seating positions, plus age and looks (especially the nose), I would think it is the husband.) The event/scene is the grandmother's birthday. She is being garlanded by the girl and her mother. Hats, belonging to the husband and wife, 'are off' to the side of the scene. I guess it may be a 70th birthday. The positioning of the figures is important; grandmother is central to the female circle of three, but the girl is central to the painting; she is the 'heir'. The wife is demurely stepped back from the painting, to allow her husband, seated slightly apart from the group, the space and authority as the man who is head of the family. Wife and grandmother have a demure downward gaze, husband looks confident, but the girl directly faces the viewer".

      Est: £14,000 - £16,000

Benjamin Cam Norton (1825-1900) Portrait of a Sporting Family in the Peak District Signed and dated 1862, also inscribed with the artist's name and dates on a plaque attached to the frame, oil on canvas, 91cm by 126cm Benjamin Cam Norton is best known as a prolific and successful painter of racehorses at Doncaster, Cheltenham, Liverpool and Newmarket in the 1870's and 1880's. However, as a young man his range was wider, painting prize cattle, dogs, portraits and subject pictures. Professor Lamb's Dictionary of Yorkshire Artists gives rather inadequate information about this intriguing and distinctive artist. The following is additional information: Cam Norton was married aged 26 on 17 December 1860 to Eliza Nowill, aged 21, at the Apostolic Church, Victoria Street, Sheffield. His father, John Norton, is described (1851 census) as "Perfumer and Printseller", whilst hers was a "merchant" of Barker Nook, Ecclesall, Bierlow. Lucy Katherine, their first child, was born 4 December 1871 at Ecclesall, Bierlow. he 1860 Census and 1861 Trade Directory show that Cam Norton, artist, was living with Henry Norton (aged 49/50), "hairdresser and perfumer" of Norfolk Street, Sheffield. His first recorded picture was a religious copy painted in Sheffield in 1853. In 1857 he enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools giving his age as 18 (he was in fact 23). In 1862 he exhibited at the British Institution (address: Barker Nook, Sheffield): 169 Shades of Evening, waiting fro the Drover (30gns) 291 The Random Shot (12gns) In 1869 he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy (address: 5 Regent Street, Cheltenham) 181 My Katie 310 River Rother, Sussex By 1881 (census) he was living at 7 Bath Place, Cheltenham with his wife, his daughter Kate and son George Clarence. He died at Gainsborough Villa, Rock Road, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge on New Year's Day 1900. According to his will, dated 27 May 1899, he left his house and remaining pictures to his son. Benjamin Cam Norton's early realistic landscapes show a marked debt to Pre-Raphaelit m and this style may have been introduced to him by an association with John Ruskin or a friendship with Elizabeth Siddal, a Sheffield girl. It will be noted that the male sitter in this group portrait (apparently his masterpiece) sports a gold hunting horn pin in his stock suggesting an association with hunting. The scene is probably in the Southern Peaks, near Ashbourne. See illustration

Cam Norton and dated 1883 (lower left) oil on canvas NOTE Voluptuary, a gelding by Cremorne out of Miss Evelyn was foaled in 1878 and owned by Mr. H.F. Boyd. The horse had a prosperous early career winning the Grand National and he expanded on his vocation on the Drury Lane stage. This second career as an actor brought him onstage nightly in a performance of The Prodigal Daughter where he jumped over a water jump as his rider fell off into the water. In this work, Voluptuary is being ridden by the famous amateur jockey, Edward P. Wilson. Voluptuary and Wilson won their first Grand National in 1884. Mr. Wilson is recorded as having ridden in nearly every Grand National from 1873 to 1891. His last ride was on his first time winner, Voluptuary, in 1891.
