Born in Boston, William Norton became a noted marine painter, stirred by his youth when he sailed on family-owned ships. He studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston, and with George Inness, and then established a studio in Boston. In the early 1870s, he went to Paris and became a student with Chevreuse and A. Vollon, and then he settled in London where he exhibited throughout the last quarter of the 19th century. His reputation there was based on his scenes of the Thames River, and ocean and coastal views. In 1901, he returned to the United States and settled in New York City. He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, where a treacherous ledge on the southern side of the island is named "Norton's Ledge" for him. Overall Size: 9 x 12 in. William Edward Norton (1843-1916) Kelp Gathering (c.1880)

          Est: €8,000 - €12,000

William Edward Norton (1843-1916) Kelp Gathering (c.1880) oil on canvas signed 'W.E. Norton' lower left h:45  w:59.70 cm. Provenance: Sotheby's, London, 14th September 2006 lot 150; Coyle Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection Depicting horse-drawn carts on a beach at low tide, with men gathering up seaweed, this canvas, by the New England maritime painter William Edward Norton, dates probably from the 1870's. Although Realist, it is atmospheric and conveys well the silvery light of the seashore on a cloudy day. Norton painted several scenes of kelp gathering, both in oil on canvas and also in watercolour. Another painting by him, The Last Load, shows a heavily-laden cart being hauled along a sandy track. Born in 1843 in Boston, William Edward Norton came from a family of ship builders and during his childhood became familiar with the sea and sailing ships. After a period as a naval cadet, he studied at both Harvard Medical School and the Lowell Institute. At Lowell, he developed an interest in art and began studying with George Inness, whose own poetic style influenced the young artist. In the 1870's, Norton went to Paris, where he studied with Louis Jacquesson de la Chevreuse and Antoine Vollon. He and his wife then settled in London, where he became known for his marine paintings, of coastal areas and the river Thames. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and also received an honorary mention at the 1895 Paris Salon. In 1901 he returned to the United States, settling in New York City, where he continued to paint, making many painting excursions to Monhegan Island in Maine. He died in New York in 1916. Est: $2,000 - $3,000

William E. Norton (1843-1916) Off Staten Island Oil on artist board, 8" tall x 10" long Signed lower left: WE Norton; Inscribed on verso: "Off Staten Island / New York / William E. Norton" Provenance: private collection, Florida William Edward Norton was both a professional sailor and an accomplished artist, and his ship paintings exemplify his intimate knowledge of nautical architecture, as well as his refined draftsmanship and exceptional handling of paint. Born and raised in Boston to a family of sailors, ship-builders, and sail-makers, Norton spent his childhood around boatyards and sailing on voyages in family owned vessels. As a teen, Norton showed artistic inclination and was apprenticed to a house and sign painter while at night he attended art lessons at the Lowell Institute. He later enrolled in Harvard Medical School to become a physician but was more interested in making detailed anatomical drawings. His love of the sea and his passion for drawing lured him to pursue a different career path‹ marine painting. By the time he opened a studio on Washington Street in Boston in 1864, he was under the guidance of renowned artist George Inness. In 1867 Norton made his exhibition debut at the Boston Athenaeum with a painting titled Off the Shore. The following year, his painting Herring Fishing was exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York. Norton made several more sea voyages and sketching excursions, after which he auctioned off over one hundred paintings to finance his studies abroad. In 1877 he sailed to England, then traveled to Paris, where he studied with Antoine Vollon and Jacquesson de la Chevreuse. Although he was in France at the time when the Impressionist movement was beginning to flourish, Norton maintained his preference for academic painting over the new style, which he found Ðinteresting but incomplete.Ó In 1882 Norton moved to London where his interest turned to scenes of the Thames River and Englands rocky coast. He regularly returned to France on painting excursions throughout Normandy and Brittany. In 1901 he and his wife moved back to the United States and settled in New York City at 1931 Broadway. Norton travel throughout New England, returning again to Monhegan Island, Maine, where a treacherous ledge on the southern side of the island near Lobster Cove is named Nortons Ledge in his honor. Norton was a member of the Boston Art Club where he exhibited from 1873 to 1909. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Blackheath Art Club in London. He exhibited his works at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, Royal Academy in London, Paris Salon, and at Chicago in the International Exposition in 1893. His artwork is housed in prestigious public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Historical Society, Portland, and Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine; Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts; and the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.
