William Notman Photographs of Blackfoot and Cree Indians

          Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Lot of 4 albumen photographs, each on 9 x 11 in. mount. William Notman & Son: Montreal, ca 1880s. Some are uncredited but believed to be taken by Notman. Subjects identified in the negative and on mount, and include: " Pisquapita (Hair in Knot) Cree Indian, Calgary"; "Kuskita au Musqua (Black Bear Cree squaw), Calgary"; untitled view of a Blackfoot family sitting in front of tipi. Vast expanse of Plains behind them; and " Canada Indians," as penciled in lower margin, showing a large gathering of people, possibly a ceremony.William Notman (1826-1891) immigrated to Montreal from Scotland in 1856, bringing his family over a bit later. He eventually gained an international reputation, setting up branches in both Canada and the United States, including at Yale and Harvard seasonally to tap into the student trade. His images range from trains and trestles, to other constructions such as bridges, to individual portraits, to the rapidly vanishing aboriginal peoples of North America. After his death, a couple of sons continued his legacy. McGill University purchased the Notman Collection from the Associated Screen News who had purchased it from the last son (Charles) in 1935 when he retired. The McCord Museum used this collection as the beginning of an extensive collection of Canadian photography built up over the past half-century.William Notman (1826-1891) was a Scottish-Canadian photographer with an international reputation. He was based in Montreal but had several studio locations and maintained seasonal branches at both Harvard and Yale to capitalize off of the student populations.

Despite the financial toll of such a massive building project, the quickly westward-moving United States sparked Sir John A. Macdonald and the federal government into action, and they considered the construction of the railway a national imperative. Printed by Notman, the first internationally recognized Canadian photographer, these photographs of early railway construction depict the rugged and sublime nature of the land, visually expressing and impressing the difficulty of the task. The creation of hotels, new towns and cities, shipping lines and trade with the Pacific, and a greater involvement in mining and metallurgy, served as tangible signs of the benefits of such expansion.Estimate: $1,000—1,500

(flattened) fold). = Very fine series of views relating to the Canadian Pacific, for which William Notman and his son William McFarlane Notman made a large number of expeditions, illustrating i.a. landscapes, buildings, workers etc. "As the Canadian Pacific buckled more and more of the country together, finally linking Canadian territory from "sea unto sea", William Notman increased the number of these photographic expeditions. His eldest son, William McFarlane Notman, who had been with the firm since he was sixteen, was sent West in 1884. This was to be the first of eight remarkable western trips that the younger Notman was to make, all in connection with the continent-spanning Canadian Pacific Railway. The scheme had been hammered out with the railway's chief, William Van Horne. The Notman firm was to record the triumph of the line, fast nearing completion. The deal included free transportation for Notman's photographer and assistent in exchange for a set of photographs. Notman, of course, would keep the negatives and the copyright. Van Horne asked for specific subjects to be recorded (...) and he was especially keen to obtain views of the Rocky Mountains. Van Horne was a good businessman, and was acutely aware of the power of the photograph to inform and persuade. To attract settlers and tourists alike to the West was his admitted goal, and photography soon became a major element of the CPR's drive to increase rail traffic" (Hall a.o., p.21). The collection comprises: 1605 - Nepigon Bridge; 1633 - C.P.R. Hotel.
