    Elizabeth Nourse (1859 - 1938) (OH/Paris) Watercolor and Crayon

Watercolor and crayon of mother and child. Signed Elizabeth Nourse. 8.75 x 6.5 site, frame; 17.75 x 14.5. Provinance; Collection of Beth and Jay Karp Elizabeth Nourse, born at Mt. Healthy (Cincinnati), Ohio on 26 October 1859, enrolled with her twin sister Adelaide at the McMicken School of Design in 1874 and took instruction from Thomas S. Noble (1835-1907). Adelaide would become a wood-carver. At that time there was still no possibility for a woman to draw after the nude male figure, which was an important step in the traditional curriculum for art students. Some of Elizabeth's early works show the indirect influence of Frank Duveneck's broad-brushed technique (e.g. Old Man and Child, 1887). Nourse studied briefly under William Sartain (1843-1924) in New York and met William Merritt Chase and J. Alden Weir. She traveled to Paris with Louise, another sister, in the summer of 1887 then enrolled in the Académie Julian's school for women. Already in the following year she was successful in showing La mère (now in a private collection) at the Salon — and it was hung "on the line," that is, at the most advantageous eye-level position. That summer she went to Barbizon and fell in love with rural France. Further travels took her to Russia via Warsaw and she also discovered Provence, sites in Italy, Germany and Austria, and the artists' colony in Picardy.

Lifetime collection of Carol and Robert (Rob) Kane, Oxford, OH.  Carol and Robert (Rob) Kane were residents of Oxford, Ohio since 1962. Rob taught Classics at Miami University (Ohio) for 37 years and volunteered at the Saint Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen in Cincinnati for 13 years after his retirement. Carol was active for over three decades as a docent at Miami University Art Museum and a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization, which helps women achieve their educational goals through scholarships and grants. Married 51 years, the couple raised two sons who survive them, John and Ned, both of California. Carol and Rob traveled widely in North and South America, Asia, and Europe. They shared a lifelong passion for art, and museums and galleries were at the top of their agenda when traveling. Over the decades, they collected art both close to home and during their travels. A special example is a two month tour of Japan and China in 1985, when tourism in China was just starting to reopen. They took along their young sons and, with input from Asian art historians friends touring with them, collected numerous paintings and ceramics. Many of those items, along with others collected in the US and around the world, are included in this sale. Others were inherited by Carol and Rob from their parents, especially Rob’s mother Mary Geraldine Kane of New York City, who collected in the US, Ireland, and the UK. Carol was born in Grosse Pointe, MI, attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart and Manhattanville College, and earned a masters degree in European history from Georgetown University.  Rob was from New York City, attended the College of the Holy Cross, and earned a PhD from Princeton University.

    Elizabeth Nourse (American, 1859-1938) "Maternity"

    Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Elizabeth Nourse (American, 1859-1938) "Maternity" 22.8 inches high x 18 inches wide. Signed. Elizabeth Nourse (1859-1938) was one of the first nineteenth-century American female artists to become a successful Paris Salon painter and to be elected sociétaire in four categories ? drawing, pastel, watercolor, and oil painting ? by the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Her paintings appear in major international exhibitions. With singular empathy for her humble subjects, Nourse's unflinching realism gives an insight into the challenges of their daily lives. Born into a prosperous Cincinnati family, Nourse was affected by the 1861 failure of her father's bank during the Civil War. When the family was forced to move to Mt. Auburn, near the fledgling McMicken School of Design (later the Cincinnati Art Academy), the talented "Lizzie" qualified for free tuition. During her eight years (1874-1881) at McMicken, Nourse studied with artists whose names represent the golden age of Cincinnati art: John W. Twachtman, M. Louise McLaughlin, Edward Potthast, and Joseph Henry Sharp. She excelled at drawing, etching and lithography, sculpture, woodcarving, and watercolor and oil painting. Nourse refused a teaching position at McMicken in order to concentrate on painting. For that purpose she went to New York to study at the Art Students League and enrolled in McMicken's first course offering women the opportunity to study from the nude. Shipping Third Party.
