    • PIETRO NOVELLI (Monreale, 1603 - Palermo, 1647). ‘Infant Jesus and Saint Christopher’. Oil on canvas. Relined.
      May. 29, 2024

PIETRO NOVELLI (Monreale, 1603 - Palermo, 1647). ‘Infant Jesus and Saint Christopher’. Oil on canvas. Relined.

      Est: €10,000 - €12,000

PIETRO NOVELLI (Monreale, 1603 - Palermo, 1647). ‘Infant Jesus and Saint Christopher’. Oil on canvas. Relined. Size: 120 x 85 cm; 143 x 108 cm (frame). Formally, this work belongs to the Italian school of the first half of the 17th century, more specifically to the circle of Pietro Novelli. Thus, we see in this work the tenderness, delicacy and subtlety that were Novelli's hallmarks, particularly evident in the delicate canvases, skilfully rendered, and in the pearly flesh tones, worked with a modelling based on the subtlety of the play of light and shade. Pietro Novelli, of Italian origin, achieved great fame as a painter, although he also devoted himself to architecture and was appointed architect to the kingdom. His training was linked to his father's workshop, who was also a painter. His links with Palermo, a place to which he travelled frequently, indicate that he probably attended the school of Vito Carrera. Furthermore, the presence of Van Dyck and the stylistic influence of the master that can be seen in Novelli's painting reinforces the idea that he trained in Palermo. A devotional work in which the artist depicts Saint Christopher with the Child. Christopher is a saint whose legend goes back no further than the 11th century, originating from the development of his name, Christophorus, which in Greek means ‘the one who carries Christ’. Originally, this expression was understood in a spiritual sense, as one who carries Christ in his heart. Later it was taken in a material sense. According to the tradition popularised during the 13th century by the Golden Legend, the man who carried Christ on his shoulders could only be a giant. Proud of his strength, he only agreed to serve the most powerful king in the universe. He placed himself in the service of a monarch, but finding that the monarch was afraid of the devil, he left him to serve Satan. Disappointed again that the sight of a cross at a crossroads was enough to defeat the devil, he pledged himself to serve Christ, and to please him he devoted himself to helping travellers and pilgrims across a dangerous river. One evening he heard himself called by a child, who asked him to carry him on his shoulders; but his burden grew heavier and heavier. So much so that the giant reached the opposite bank with difficulty. Then the child made himself known as Christ. To prove it to him, he asked Christopher to plant his staff in the ground, which immediately became a palm tree laden with fruit.

PIETRO NOVELLI, IL MONREALESE Monreale 1603 – Palermo 1647 Saint Christopher with the Child Oil on canvas Size 121 x 84.5 cm Origin: Collection of the Granada diplomat Fernando Gómez Contreras, first third of the s. XX Pietro Novelli is one of the most outstanding artists of the Sicilian art scene of the 17th century. The son of a painter, his early training included frequent trips to Palermo, where it has been suggested that he attended the Vito Carrera school. Van Dyck's passage through Sicily in 1624 had an immediate influence on the island artists, so this undoubtedly constitutes one of his greatest debts; In addition, we know that Novelli was a member of the Compañía del Rosario since 1630, and that this community received The Coronation of the Virgin from the Antwerp painter on those same dates. It has also been pointed out that, between 1631 and 1632, he was able to make a trip to Naples and Rome, so his influences should be extended to the naturalism of painters such as Antiveduto Grammatica, Battistello Caracciolo, Massimo Stanzione or José de Ribera, who have determined his artistic personality, in which riverside naturalism is combined with the refined elegance and color of Van Dyck. His pictorial career developed in parallel to his work as an architect. Novelli was appointed "architect of the kingdom" of Sicily in 1643, but we only know this facet through his designs, since none of his architectural works have survived to this day. In Spain, works by Novelli are kept from the Royal Collection and the founding fund of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, as well as from various private collections.

      Est: €4,500 - €5,000

Circle of PIETRO NOVELLI (Monreale, 1603-Palermo, 1647). "Saint Rosalia of Palermo". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. Size: 114 x 76 cm. A still life placed in the foreground and formed by an open book and a skull, indicates us the subject of the represented scene. On this Vanitas, kneeling and with a pious gesture is the woman mentioned in the book Santa Rosalia. She is comforted by the figure of the Virgin and Jesus, who surround her and in the case of the Virgin even consoles her with his arms. In front of the saint, the figure of Christ is shown as a vision of resurrection. Standing, dressed in a voluminous red cloak, Jesus stretches out his hands towards the saint, showing her the wounds on his hands. The heavenly area is dominated by the presence of God the Father, in the centre, the dove of the Holy Spirit on the left, and on the right, three little loves, one of whom holds a floral garland with which he approaches to crown Saint Rosalie. Rosalia of Palermo was a 12th-century Italian saint whose cult was promoted by the Benedictines. She is considered a protector against infectious diseases, such as the plague, and is also invoked to seek her protection in difficult times. Rosalia lived in solitude, poverty and penance, and according to her hagiography she performed miracles such as the extinction of the plague that devastated her native Sicily. Patron saint of Palermo, she enjoys great devotion in Sicily. Saint Rosalia was an important subject in Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting, particularly in the sacre conversazioni (group images of saints flanking the Virgin Mary) of artists such as Riccardo Quartararo, Mario di Laurito, Vincenzo La Barbara and possibly Antonello da Messina. But it was the Flemish master Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1637), who was caught in Palermo during the plague of 1624, who produced the largest number of paintings of her. Saint Rosalia is usually depicted as a young woman with flowing blonde hair, wearing a Franciscan hood or a crown of flowers and leaning towards the city of Palermo in her peril. In this particular case, the features of Saint Rosalia and the execution of the work bring us closer to the painting of Pietro Novelli, who dedicated several of his works to the saint, notably the one in the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the piece in the San Fernando School of Fine Arts.

Drawing allegedly by Pietro Novelli, the "Monrealese" (Monreale Palermo 1603-1647) depicting Saint Jerome translated the Holy Scriptures. Watercolor on paper, brown ink. Mm 209x260. "Pietro Novelli, the Monrealese, was one of the greatest exponents of baroque painting of the seventeenth century Palermo. He trained at his father’s workshop and between 1622 and 1625 was active in Rome, studying the major painters of the Renaissance. In 1630 is documented his presence in Naples, where he had the opportunity to admire works of Jusepe de Ribera and the Neapolitan naturalist painters. In Palermo, it will be strongly influenced by the paintings of the Genoese school present in the Oratory of Santo Stefano Protomartire al Monte di Pietà and the Adoration of the Shepherds of Caravaggio at the Oratory of San Lorenzo. Other suggestions come from the Flemish painter Antoon van Dyck, who stayed in Palermo in 1624. The sketch in question depicts St Jerome translating the Sacred Scriptures, immersed in a wooded landscape. The muscular figure of the saint, the draperies, as well as its posing, recall the work painted by Monrealese, representing the Resurrection of Christ, kept at the Prado Museum in Madrid." Novelli was trained in his father's workshop in Monreale, Sicily and was initially influenced by the local Mannerist art of painting of the Late Mannerism. After moving to Palermo, the young man turned to the art of Van Dyck, who stayed in the city to carry out various commissions between 1622 and 1624. Around 1633 Novelli was in Rome and finally in Naples, where he again changed his formal style inspired by the art scene dominated by Ribera and Massimo Stanzione. Through these impulses Novelli created his own personal style, which is characterized by a distinct dark lighting and a sensual brushstroke, reminiscent of Venetian paintings probably seen in Rome, but also of the works of Van Dyck. This painting, which depicts the Infant Saint John the Baptist with the Lamb of God, is mentioned in the painting inventory of April 19, 1865 by Maria Carolina Ferdinanda Luisa delle Due Sicilie, Duchess of Berry by marriage, as "Monrealèse: Saint-Jean assis, caressing son mouton". This attribution was confirmed by Riccardo Lattuada, who states that it is a youthful work of the Sicilian artist. We are grateful to Riccardo Lattuada, Naples, for confirming the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph.

NOVELLI. Volto di donna in ovale.

      Est: €2,500 - €3,500

Pietro Novelli.

• Novelli, Saint Andrew, O/C
      Mar. 09, 2013

      Novelli, Saint Andrew, O/C

      Est: $10,000 - $20,000

Pietro Novelli (Italian, 1603-1647), portrait of Saint Andrew, oil on canvas, dated 1631-32, in newer frame, 36" x 31" (view), 42" x 37" (frame). Estate of the Late Alberto Ricciardi, New York, the painting was deaccessioned from a New York Institute in the 1920's.The importance of Pietro Novelli in the development of South Italian painting, climaxing with the works of Cavallino, Carracciolo, Luca Giordano and Matía Preti, has only recently been acknowledged. Early on in his career Novelli became acquainted with the art of van Dyck who, in 1624, was working in Palermo. The elegance and ease with which his figures moved and the harmony of his compositions were characteristics of van Dyck's work that had a particular influence on Novelli. However, in accordance with the tradition of Sicilian Caravaggism, Novelli used a stronger colour palette. In Naples, this style began to dominate in the 1630´s through an acquaintance with the work of Ribera. Novelli's main work is that depicting Saint Benedict in the monastery of Montreal, painted in 1635. Right up until his death Novelli maintained his certainty in style; the elegance of his drawing and the harmony of his compositions and palette.
