Guillermo Nunez (born 1930) focuses on hard themes, such as torture, violence and pain in his works; all a reflection on his personal experiences in his native country, Chile.Nunez forces his audience to reflect on inescapable human problems while he simultaneously commits to the aesthetics of objects and their presentation as art. Nunez, an intellect and perceived threat, was sentenced to time in Puchuncavi concentration camp in Santiago, Chile. There he spent five months blindfolded, enduring torture and suffering. It was camps like these that took many of his friends and fellow intellects and provided Nunez with a strong commitment to demonstrating human brutality. He wanted to make us conscious of such atrocities that we otherwise would struggle to forget. Nunez believes that it is this consciousness that will ultimately make humankind more alive and attentive.Un Canto de Herido (Song of the Wounded) is evidence of not only Nunez's commitment to beauty and aesthetics, but also of his need to connect the practice of art with inescapable human suffering. At first glance, this painting appears to be a cool composition of balanced and attractive abstract images, but after reflecting on the personal experiences of the artist, fragments of bones and pieces of dismembered bodies become evident. His art is a vehicle for him to express the intensity of man's pain as well as to denounce torture against the weak. He works within a process where technique and aesthetics maintain an evident presence. While the compositions of Guillermo Nunez are rooted in vibrant color and strong composition, they are metaphors for social oppression and require that the audience reflect and become conscious of poverty, hardship and inescapable human suffering. The art of Nunez reveals an artist dedicated to beauty as well as social change.
