Queenie Nungarrayi Stewart was born in 1972 at Yuendumu in central Australia.

Queenie is the only daughter of Paddy Stewart Japaljarri, Chairman of Warlukurlangu Art Centre and one of the main artists who participated in painting significant Dreamings on the Yuendumu School Doors, which later became a well known collection.

Queenie commenced painting with the Warlukurlangu Art Centre in 1997. With her father's guidance, together they paint collaborative work, depicting iconography of traditional Dreaming stories. Queenie and her father Paddy are custodians of their country, Yuendumu in Central Australia.

Queenie depicts in her work traditional iconography which represents stories from the Dreamtime, particular sites and other elements associated with her country.

        Synthetic polymer paint on canvas panel, 30.5 x 60.9cm. Signed and titled on reverse. Annotated with diagrams explaining the symbolic motifs used in the work (including hollow, possum tails, possum tracks), stamped with official identification: 'WARLUKURLANGU ARTISTS, R.M.B. 103, Yuendumu, via Alice Springs, N.T.' The back with some stains and water marks, the front with two screwheads visible from mounting. Available for local pickup, otherwise courier to be arranged and paid for by bidder. Queenie Nungarrayi Stewart was born in Alice Springs but lives in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community located 290km north-west of Alice Springs in the NT of Australia. She is the only daughter of Paddy Japaljarri Stewart, the Chairman of Warlukurlangu Art Centre, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, and one of its founding and most long-standing artists and also one of the main artists of the Yuendumu School Doors. Queenie grew up in Yuendumu and attended the local school. She has two children, Dion and Bevan from her first marriage and several grand-children. She is married to Edward Jangala Smith, also a painter with the art centre. She has been painting with the centre since 1997, often painting together with her father and learning the large number of traditional Dreaming stories. Both Paddy Stewart and Queenie are traditional owners of the land where Yuendumu is located. She enjoys painting on canvas and linen, occasionally also creating work on beads, coolamons or music sticks.
