NN0409127 PROVENANCE Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, Northern Territory Tony Bond, Adelaide Private collection, Adelaide ESSAY Born around 1932, senior Pintupi artist Naata Nungurrayi is celebrated for works which act as visual manifestations of her lived experience and intangible cultural knowledge. As the artist describes: ‘I am painting my home, my Country — women’s Kanaputa story. Travelling along Irrututu, Tjuntupul, Marrapinti, Ngami, Wirrul. A long time ago, I travelled all around this Country, from place to place.’1 Across her practice, Nungurrayi visually translated facets of the geographies and topographies of culturally significant sites and designs associated with Kungka (Women) Dreaming – specifically her home of Marrapinti, a sacred waterhole located to the west of Pollock Hills, Western Australia, where a group of travelling ancestral women stopped and made nose-bones (known as marrapinti), to be worn in the context of ceremonial occasions by older generations of Pintupi. Painted in warm hues, the vibrantly coloured composition, Marrapinti, 2004, reflects the way Nungurrayi painted with a ‘singled-minded, trance like’ focus, and ‘an intensity that matches the colours at play in her work’.2 In this work, the densely layered and modulated fields of warm dotted colour, overlaid with bold gestural lines, typify Nungurrayi’s mastery in rendering the depth and intangible energy of country, with these interconnecting lines representing the living presence of the tali (sandhills) of her Country. As Luke Scholes articulates, ‘Naata is one of Papunya Tula Artists’ most celebrated painters. A quintessential Pintupi eccentric, briming with life and a rare, painterly gift.’3 1. Naata Nungurrayi - Women at Marrapinti, 2001

          Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Naata Nungurrayi was about 30 years of age when she brought with her family to Papunya after leaving behind her beloved desert homelands in the Pollock Hills in Western Australia. She settled in the Kintore region in the early 1980s and began creating paintings in a carefully composed geometric style for Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. This painting, in her tight grid style, depicts designs associated with the rockhole and soakage water site of Marrapinti. The lines are sandhills surrounding the area. A large group of senior women camped at this rockhole making the nose-bones which are worn through a hole in the nose web. These nose-bones were originally worn by both men and women but are now only worn by the older generation on ceremonial occasions. The women later traveled east passing through Wala Wala, Kiwirrkura and Ngaminya.

          Naata Nungurrayi - Marrapinti, 2009

          Est: $150,000 - $220,000

Naata Nungurrayi was about 30 years of age when she encountered the 'welfare patrol' in 1963, who forced her and her family to Papunya. She began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. Forced to leave behind her beloved desert homelands, the memory of these places and the life she led, has provided the inspiration and the subject matter for her highly sought-after paintings. Naata’s paintings combine the carefully composed geometric style that developed at Papunya amongst the Pintupi painting men, with the looser technique and more painterly organic style introduced by the women after the painting camps of the early and mid 1990s. This work depicts designs associated with the rockhole and soakage water site of Marrapinti, to the west of the Pollock Hills in Western Australia. The lines are sandhills surrounding the area, and the roundels represent rockholes.

Naata Nungurrayi was about 30 years of age when she was brought with her family to Papunya in 1964. Forced to leave behind her beloved desert homelands, the memory of these places, and the life she led there, provided the inspiration and the subject matter for her paintings after she began working with Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. Naata’s paintings combine the carefully composed geometric style that developed at Papunya amongst the Pintupi painting men, with a looser technique and more painterly organic style introduced by the women after the painting camps of the early and mid 1990s. This work depicts designs associated with the rockhole and soakage water site of Marrapinti, to the west of the Pollock Hills in Western Australia. The lines represent sandhills surrounding the area, and the roundels represent rockholes where a large group of senior women camped. They can be seen in this painting as U shapes sitting in groups. The myth relating to these women tells of how they first made the nose-bones which are traditionally worn through a hole in the nose web. These nose-bones were originally worn by both men and women but are now only worn by the older generation on ceremonial occasions.

Naata Nungurrayi - Marrapinti Rockhole and Soakage Site, 2008

          Est: $45,000 - $65,000

Naata Nungurrayi was about 30 years of age when she was brought with her family to Papunya in 1964. Forced to leave behind her beloved desert homelands, the memory of these places and the life she led there provided the inspiration and the subject matter for her paintings after she began working with Papunya Tula Artists in 1996. The lines depict sandhills surrounding the area, and the roundels represent rockholes where a large group of senior women camped. They are depicted in this painting as U shapes sitting in groups. The myth relating to these women tells of how they first made the nose-bones which are traditionally worn through a hole in the nose web. These nose-bones were originally worn by both men and women but are now only worn by the older generation on ceremonial occasions.

Naata Nungurrayi - Marrapinti, West of Kiwirrkura, 2012

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Cooee Art Indigenous Fine Art Auction "This painting depicts the creation events at the rockhole site of Marrapinti, west of Kiwirrkura. A group of senior women camped at this site and gathered kampurarrpa - bush raisin, from the Solanum centrale plant species common to Central Australia. The fruit is eaten directly from the plant and can also be ground into a flour and baked in the hot coals. Naata depicts her homeland "ngura" from an aerial perspective and includes such features as the "tali" or sandhills, "puli" or rock outcrops and "punti" or vegetation. The linear appearance of the painting design depicts the alignment of the topography in the landscape near Naata's homeland. This predominantly east-west alignment had a strong influence on the movements of the nomadic First Nations people. During ceremony, women act out the activities of ancestral beings and the songlines are performed in a repetitive manner. Rockhole sites such as Marrapinti have been a reliable source of drinking water through the generations and, as such, continue to be important ceremony sites to this day.+IB0 Contact Cooee Art for more information on this Aboriginal artwork.

Naata Nungurrayi was about 30 years of age when she brought with her family to Papunya after leaving behind her beloved desert homelands in the Pollock Hills in Western Australia. These places and the life she led there have provided the wellspring of her inspiration and the subject matter for her highly sought after paintings. After initially moving to Docker River with family members in the late 1970s she finally settled in the Kintore region in the early 1980s. She began creating paintings in a carefully composed geometric style for Papunya Tula Artists in 1996 and went on to develop a looser technique and more painterly organic style from the mid 1990s onward.
