    • Roy Cleveland Nuse (American, 1885-1975) Three Boys at the Sheephole
      Feb. 21, 2024

Roy Cleveland Nuse (American, 1885-1975) Three Boys at the Sheephole

      Est: $25,000 - $35,000

Roy Cleveland Nuse (American, 1885-1975) Three Boys at the Sheephole oil on canvas 36 x 30 inches. Provenance: The Artist By descent to his son, Jean Paul Nuse By descent from the above to his son, Gene Nuse, Missouri Sold: Freeman's, Philadelphia, June 27, 2004, Lot 193 Private Collection, New Jersey, acquired at the above sale Sold: Freeman's, Philadelphia, December 6, 2015, Lot 125 Born in Springfield, Ohio in 1885, Roy Cleveland Nuse was encouraged at the age of 20 to enroll at the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he worked under Frank Duveneck. Nuse then studied with New Hope School teacher Daniel Garber at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) from 1915-18 while teaching part-time at the Beachwood School. During this period, he moved his family to rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he lived and painted for almost 60 years, working in a plein-air, impressionist style. He, with his artist wife, Ellen Guthrie Nuse, had six children that were often the subjects of some of his best paintings, especially in outdoor, rural, farm settings. In 1925, Nuse was offered a teaching position at PAFA, where he taught until 1954, after which he taught privately at his home. Although Nuse lived in Bucks County most of his life, he avoided becoming a part of the New Hope School, despite knowing many of the artists in the group, as he preferred to keep to himself and his family. Three Boys at the Sheephole belongs to a series of canvases that depict Nuse's children in the woods, and which the artist referred to as "boys in the glen." His six children were favorite models and subjects, who he often staged in the Rushland Valley, near the Neshaminy and Mill Creeks. According to Robin Nuse, the artist's granddaughter, the two figures on the left of the painting were posed for by the artist's son Paul, with the remaining figure on the right his other son, Oliver. The “boys in the glen” series follows a long academic tradition that places a group of figures (in this case children), unclothed as nymphs, walking, or sitting near shimmering pools of water or in woodland tableaux. Additionally, although Nuse used his own children as models, he paints them almost anonymously, portraying them as innocents in a storybook setting, almost as if they are a fairy tale brought to life. The suggestion of mythological creatures gamboling in an idyllic landscape is heightened by the artist’s use of dappled sunlight and shimmering colors, as well as carefully placed compositional elements, such as the overarching branches and curving rocks. The tranquil vision, with its private, intimate setting, creates a sense of pure and innocent beauty and unsullied youth.

    • Roy Cleveland Nuse (American, 1885–1975) Three Children by the Pond
      Jun. 04, 2023

Roy Cleveland Nuse (American, 1885–1975) Three Children by the Pond

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Roy Cleveland Nuse (American, 1885–1975) Three Children by the Pond Signed with Artist's cypher (conjoined initials) and dated '20' bottom left; also titled, dated, and inscribed with dimensions on upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5cm) Provenance The Artist. By descent in the Nuse Family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Note Roy Celeveland Nuse met his wife, Ellen Guthrie, at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where the artist had enrolled in 1905. The pair married in 1911 and went on to have six children, who would become Nuse's favorite models and subjects, and who he would stage in his beloved and peaceful Rushland Valley, nearby the Neshaminy and Mill Creeks. The present work depicts Nuse's two eldest sons, (Jean-)Paul and Olivier, playing with a paper boat in the creek, while their youngest sister, Dorothy (the subject of many other paintings including Lot 86, which shows her by a rose garden) stands undressed on the river bend, gazing at the viewer moments before entering the cold water. While Nuse was described in his lifetime as an assidous and very serious painter, he was also known for the love and devotion he professed to his family, friends and neighbors. This strong fatherly bond is clearly pictured here as Dorothy is looking straight at the viewer (her father, in fact) with an endearing, slightly mischiefed air. As Nuse explained: "I used my children as models because they were close to me," thus shyly implying "a loving fondness for his brood" more than just a handy proximity according to Erika Jaeger Smith. The oil belongs to a long series of canvases which show Nuse's children in the woods, and which the artist referred to as "boys in the glen." Considered amongst his best work, such oils attest to Nuse's academic training as one could easily mistake them for mythological tableaux of woodland nymphs and gods. The shimmering colors and dappling light also contribute to this idyllic vision, in which the privacy of the moment and the intimacy of the setting blend to make the viewer feel proviledged to witness such pure, innocent and enchanting beauty.

      Est: $20,000 - $30,000

By descent in the family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. exhibited: "Roy C. Nuse: Figures And Landscapes," James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, February 9-May 12, 2002, no. 34 (illustrated in the exhibition catalogue). note: The present work belongs to a series of figurative paintings Nuse referred to as 'boys in the glen,' which he considered to be among his most important work. Nuse often used his six children as figure models for his paintings, and the landscape surrounding his Bucks County home as backdrops. In "Figures in the Glen," Nuse places three of his sons along a verdant creek bank, wading in the shallow, light-dappled water. The painting adheres to a long academy tradition, placing unclothed figures in woodland tableaux, walking or sitting near a shimmering pool of water. Nuse treatment of sunlight-golden flecks on the surface of the creek, the trees, and the downy forest floor lends a fairy-tale air to the scene, almost transforming the innocent boys into mythological creatures.

By descent in the family to his son, Jean Paul Nuse. By descent in the family to his son, Gene Nuse, Missouri. Freeman's, sale of June 27, 2004, lot 193. Acquired from the above. Private Collection, New Jersey. note:/span According to Robin Nuse, the artist's grand-daughter, the two figures on the left of the painting were posed for by the artist's son Paul, the remaining figure on the right was his other son, Oliver. "The second group of Nuse's figurative paintings included several series that place his figures in landscape settings. Among them was a succession of images that Nuse called "boys in the glen," and he considered these to be among his most important work. Again, following a long academy tradition, this series placed a group of figures (in this case children), unclothed as nymphs, walking or sitting near shimmering pools of water or in woodland tableaux. Although painted in realistic nature scenes, these images have a slightly different feel from his other figurative work. While Nuse still used his own children as models, he draws them more anonymously, and the overall effect is one of innocents in a storybook setting, almost as if we were seeing a fairy tale brought to life. The suggestion of mythological creatures gamboling through the woods is heightened by Nuse's use of sunlight as an overall pattern, dappling water, trees, and children alike".
