It could be defined as his uninterrupted pictorial cycle, the one with which he was born and the one with which he bid farewell to the world. Essentially, under the masterful influence of Burri, they are his absolute invention. As Emilio Villa, poet, writer, and a fundamental figure of the late twentieth century, described them after seeing them for the first time during one of his repeated visits to Burri's studio on Via Margutta: "By serotipia, we mean painting using silkscreen techniques, but conducted within the limits of a unique and unrepeatable specimen." Nuvolo can also be considered a forerunner in this sense: he anticipates informal art, he anticipates pop art, internalizing and demystifying its language. In short, he goes beyond immediately. His artistic intuition, poetic depth, deeply scientific and mathematical, could not fail to impress Alberto Burri, Corrado Cagli, and Ettore Colla, who took him along the way as an assistant and companion for a certain period. But they were not the only ones. It's enough to mention Amerigo Tot, a Hungarian sculptor, who involved Nuvolo in the grand frieze of Stazione Termini, winning the competition despite the many other artists participating. We could say that a part of the history of twentieth-century art is sprinkled with the presence of Nuvolo, who, like a cloud, traverses the skies, leaving no signature but punctuating the starry vault with squiggles, signs, and strange comets. Perhaps he leaves signatures in his youthful writings, among the fundamental pages of Arti Visive of the Fondazione Origine, which opened the doors to fundamental galleries like Numero Uno in Florence by Fiamma Vigo. The serotipia, the one we present at auction, is extremely rare, precious, and comes from his personal collection, as indicated on the back label. It was given as a gift to old friends in 1972, and it's signed with pen dedication and autographed. It dates back to 1965 and is part of the core of his industrial research, yet unique and unrepeatable. Almost a hellish vision, almost a dream: signs bordering on the surreal are glimpsed. With acrylic, nitrocellulose color, oil, enamel, and tempera. An almost action painting-like mixture, yet not far from Pollock's dripping, then from the artist from Città di Castello, a magical and spectacular place where he learned the most refined and ancient printing techniques, laid, almost placed on paper, Chinese rice paper, cardboard, celotex, and chipboard. And then subsequently masterfully mounted, as you will see. If you feel like taking a tour in the Nuvolo archive, in the portfolio section, you will see some equally beautiful, powerful, reflective works. Indeed, Nuvolo's serigraphy, which precedes, we emphasize, Pop art, explains that it is the same technical module that determines its technical, chromatic, and formal prerogatives, where the silk frame does not stamp but serves only as a form for the color. This serigraphic matrix then, a stencil screen, becomes, for Nuvolo, one of the favorite places to pour color, to deposit it according to the infinite possibilities of his imagination. And the piece we present exemplifies this in an exemplary way. These color prints based on acrylic and epoxy resins create, to quote Nuvolo's rational thought, a special thickness, which, once polymerized, will almost transform into a sheet of plastic material. And it's the impression you get from looking at the work we present. Using the sieve, the artist then chooses the colors. And plays around with their infinite nuances; that realized dream of the 150 shades of gray that overlap in another famous work. It's not painting, it's not engraving. It's Nuvolo. Who dreams of covering an entire highway like this. Enough to enchant even Peggy Guggenheim, who bought many of his works in 1958 and then proudly displayed them before donating them to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. If we then think that the dedication of this work, written on the back and signed by Nuvolo, dates back to 1972, precisely the year to which Villa's latest writings on Nuvolo refer. As if to mark the beginning or end of a cycle and a new path. Nuvolo, who works by layering to bypass the psyche and the unconscious, in favor of artificial light and color stratification, quoting Germano Celant who wrote about him for the catalog of the exhibition: Nuvolo and Post War Materiality 1950-1965 at Di Donna Galleries, New York, 2017-2018 and which we invite you to carefully observe in the 1965 Serotipia that we present.
