          Est: €12,000 - €16,000

Signed and dated lower left: W.J.J. Nuijen 1838 Wijnindus Johannes Josephus Nuijen was a very talented Dutch genre and landscape painter. He became a pupil of Andreas Schelfhout in 1825 and his son-in-law in 1838. Due to his early death, he left only a small but very qualitative oeuvre. His most important paintings are owned by museums and therefore only rarely do works by him reach the market. We learn the title of the painting from a label in Dutch on the back of the picture. It is likely to be the Siege of Antwerp from 15 November to 24 December 1832, which is the last military confrontation in the context of the Belgian Revolution. The Dutch forces had to withdraw.

Scheen, The Hague. Please compare the present lot to a drawing by the artist with the same composition in the collection of the Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België in Brussels, inv. no. 2730 (see: John Sillevis, Nini Jonker, 'Wijnand Nuyen, 1813-1839: Romantische werken', The Hague 1977, ill. p. 106, no. 90). The international appearance of Nuijen’s oeuvre is remarkable and very exceptional in comparison to his Dutch colleagues. Most Dutch romantics focused on landscape art in the Low Countries, and maybe undertook the occasional journey to Germany or Belgium. Nuijen however looked beyond the borders and focused his gaze mainly towards the rapid developments of landscape art in France. His art does not necessarily need to reflect nature as realistic as possible, but often has a fantastical character. Of all the French painters, Nuijen’s work is most comparable to the oeuvre of Eugène Isabey (1803-1886). This well-known artist devoted a great part of his life to painting coastal scenes in Normandy, and he was, along with Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870) and Théodore Gudin (1802-1880), the most important French painter of seascapes. The influence of Isabey spread throughout Europe using lithographs after his compositions. Nuijen even made various sketches after these prints, stressing the importance of this artist on the career of Nuijen. The present lot, with the stranded boat, refers to this French approach of painting coastal scenes. The dramatic aspect of the composition shows the undeniable talent of Wijnand Nuijen, the boy wonder of Dutch romantic art. Instead of the temperate and fussy character of most of the paintings of his Dutch peers, Nuijen’s brushstrokes seem to sweep over the panel, covering the composition with a vivacious layer. At the same time, the painting radiates the atmosphere of a windy day at the beach, further dramatizing the peril of the boat being stuck in the sand. At the age of 26, Wijnand Nuijen died as one of the most talented artists of the country. Nuijen left a selective but very qualitative oeuvre. This painting has a huge pedigree and was clearly well coveted in the twentieth century. It remained in the prestigious collection of Bas de Geus van den Heuvel for more than 25 years and was then sold by Pieter A. Scheen to the family of the present owners. It is an honour to auction such a beautiful and rare masterpiece. Lots 134-168: A Distinguished Collection,

Scheen, The Hague. signed 'WJJ Nuijen' (lower left), Please compare to a larger painting by the artist with a similar composition in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, inv. no. 1603, dated 1836. Wijnand Nuijen is probably one of the most noticeable romantics of the Netherlands. In contrast to his Dutch contemporaries, Nuijen mainly focused on the developments in romantic landscape painting in France and England. The similarities between his oeuvre and the work of Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) are remarkable. As with Isabey, Nuijen had the talent and ability to uplift reality with a fantasticalness. His style and compositions invoke in us a dreamlike quality. Despite the early recognition for his talent, the non-realistic character of Nuijen’s work and his non-conformist attitude was often criticized by the contemporary art critics. Nuijen holds a unique position in Dutch nineteenth century art. As one of the most promising prodigies of the romantic school, his early demise at the age of 26-years leaves us with a sense of regret. One could only imagine the dazzling paintings this artistic genius could have produced. Due to his premature death, Nuijen left a selective but highly qualitative oeuvre, with the most important paintings already in the possession of museal collections. The appearance of two important works by Nuijen on the art market is extremely rare. A Distinguished Collection: lots 56-96.

Provenienz: Sammlung Rademakers. Kat. Ein romantischer Blick – Die Sammlung Rademakers, M-Museum Leuven, Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag, B. C. Provenance: -With Kunsthandel Pieter Scheen, The Hague, 1952. -Auction, Christie's, Amsterdam, 30 October 1991, lot 202a, where acquired by the family of the present owner. The picturesque river scene depicted in this painting is a typical Dutch landscape, but Nuijen also integrates some foreign elements in the composition. His charming riverscapes are often a mix of French architecture set in a tranquil Dutch environment. The contrast between the dark old building on the left and the light open view on the right is the pillar of this composition. The activities in the centre lead your eyes to their beautifully executed reflection in the water, a skill that was only mastered by a handful of Dutch romantics, not in the least by his teacher Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). The composition is completed by a windmill in the hazy distance and ducks at the bank of the river in the foreground. The warm evening sun sets the mood and makes his brushstrokes even looser. The present lot is a beautiful example of the way in which Wijnand Nuijen combines his Dutch origin with the ‘French’ style he encountered in Paris. The painter was ground-breaking for his ability to integrate these foreign romantic elements into typical Dutch nineteenth century art.

Wijnand Nuijen holds an almost legendary status in Dutch nineteenth century art. Deceased at the early age of 26, he leaves behind a select oeuvre of superb quality. The appearance of a painting by Nuijen on the art market is a rare event, as most of his works are already in museum collections. At the age of twelve Nuijen showed his talents to his famous teacher and father-in-law to be Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). Being very gifted, it did not take long for Nuijen to become a respected landscape painter. He was admired by many colleagues and received numerous awards. But the quality that makes his work stand out amongst his contemporaries is his revolutionary use of loose brushstrokes and mood setting colours. This development in his painting was greatly influenced by French romantic landscape painters such as Théodore Gudin (1802-1880) and Eugène Isabey (1803-1886). His visit to Paris in 1833 with his friend and painter Antonie Waldorp (1803-1866) was clearly essential to his oeuvre. In France, and later that year in Germany, he came into contact with romantic works of art that did not try to depict nature as faithful as possible. In contrast to Dutch romantic painters, the artist painted fantasy compositions and is in that sense much more aligned with ‘foreign’ romanticism. The present painting shows a romantic view of two girls feeding the ducks in a tranquil environment. The creative placement of the houses and green help in building an intimate composition. Nuijen creates a lot of depth in his work as he uses a strong contrast in light where the brighter parts are painted in thick impasto and the paint almost drips down from the front facade.
