b. 1913 - d. 1985

OCAMPO, Galo B. b. Santa Rita, Pampanga 16 Oct 1913 d. Virginia, USA 12 Sept 1983. Painter.

HE studied at the University of the Philippines and holds the distinction of being the only Filipino to study heraldry abroad and to hold membership in the International Institute of Genealogy and Heraldry in Madrid.

During WWII, he did intelligence work for the guerrilla movement and became a captain. As his cover, he did stage backdrops for the Associated Artists group headed by Fernando Poe Sr. In the 1960s, during the administration of Pres Diosdado Macapagal, Ocampo served as curator of the Presidential Museum of Malacanang and, subsequently, as director of the National Museum and technical adviser on heraldry in the president's office. During this time he also taught art at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and at the Far Eastern University (FEU), where he became head of the Department of Fine Arts in 1971.

Ocampo staged the revolt against academic conservatism in the 1930s together with Victorio Edades and Carlos (Botong) Francisco. The triumvirate launched a crusade to stimulate artistic development along modernist lines. In 1934 they created murals-early works in interaction-for the lobbies of the Capitol and State Theaters, which expressed their new artistic credo and the rising nationalist consciousness at the height of the Commonwealth era.

Ocampo soon developed his own artistic personality. A key painting of the period was his Brown Madonna, 1938 which indigenized the image of the Virgin Mary. Moro Dancer, and Igorot Dance, were celebrations of indigenous culture in lively colors and designs. These paintings are characterized by a modernist sense of design, linear rhythms, and fresh colors.

In the 1950s Ocampo's art was haunted with images of the war he had just lived through. The flagellant theme, fully brought out in Ecce Homo (Behold the Man), arises from harrowing experiences of the war.

Christ, crowned with thorns and hooded with the flagellant's veil, stands with arms bound together, while in the skies, warplanes zoom, trailing smoke or releasing a fleet of parachutists. In Shades of Things to Come, 1955, a flagellant lies prostrate, his arms forming a cross on the ground, while shadows of airplanes are reflected on the sand. These paintings in brown tones convey the feeling of the modern wasteland, littered with the debris of war.

The flagellant theme would undergo a significant stylistic change in the rnid-1950s with the large painting, Christ in Flagellant. Here the entire space is filled up with figures, with the hooded Christ on the cross dominant. The receding space in previous works is now replaced by a vigorous design sectioned as in stained glass.

The artist was sent to Rome in 1956 by the Archbishop of Manila to train for the work of designing stained glass for the Manila Cathedral. For the cathedral he did the seals of different Archbishops of Manila as well as those of Manila, and various images and attributes of-the Virgin Mary in the country. He also did the designs for the stained-glass windows of Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City, and the sarimanok for the Philamlife building.

It was only in 1973, at the age of 59 and after his years in government service, that Ocampo held his first one-person show at Galerie Bleue. For this exhibit he produced a new series entitled Anthropographic Designs, in which he paid tribute to the Tabon man. His field work with Robert Fox in Palawan inspired him with images of the early Pilipino: Adam and Eve growing from the ancient stalagmites and reflecting the ever-changing hues of the mysterious caves.

His 1982 retrospective at the Museum of Philippine Art brought out all his themes, although the "flagellants" had shifted from their original somber mood to a more positive tone-the hooded figure of Ecce Homo now sits on a space missile in a lunar landscape. He expanded the ethnic theme to include the ati-atihan where masked figures cavort in gaudy revelry.

Ocampo's awards from the Art Association of the Philippines are: second prize, Pounding Rice, 1951; honorable mention, Igorot Dance, 1951; special award, Weary Traveller, 1951; and the first Rotary Golden Anniversary Award, Bayanihan, 1955. He received the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1964.

Galo Ocampo (1913 - 1985) Untitled (Flagellant Series) signed and dated 1952 (lower right) oil on canvas 20" x 16" (51 cm x 41 cm) At the height of the Second World War, Galo Ocampo served as a captain in the guerilla movement and led intelligence activities. As a cover, Ocampo created stage backdrops for actor/director Fernando Poe Sr. and his Associated Artists Group. Ocampo's tasks led him toward a precarious fate. His dreadful experience as a guerilla, the harrowing destruction of the nation, and the slaughter of its people left an almost irreversible damage to his disposition. The succeeding years after the culmination of the war in 1945 were a period of reconstruction, rehabilitation, and recovery. Restoring the morale and uplifting the people's spirit was also an arduous task, and Ocampo was not exempted from this. Throughout the 1950s, Ocampo continued to be haunted by the holocaust of the war. Due to his affiliation with the Catholic faith, the artist produced a series of poignant and thoughtprovoking works that situated the Filipino Catholic practice of flagellation into the native post-war experience—the Flagellant series. In the midst of trauma, Ocampo found solace in images of Christ's passion. Thus, he was able to contextualize native tradition within the peripheries of collective experience. This piece is one of Ocampo's early paintings of the series. Here, a man tied to a cross carries the object of suffering as he exhaustingly walks towards the ruins of a war-torn Spanish colonial-era church. A flagellant's veil covers the man's face, with laurel leaves on his head. His posture conveys submission. For penitents, the act of flagellation is a way to cleanse one's soul of sins and grant wishes. Here, Ocampo expounds on the definition and relates it to the people's resounding pleas for recuperation. Although the man is burdened by suffering and submits himself towards an uncertain end, he is still bound by faith and hope, searching for a way towards healing. (A.M)

Galo Ocampo (1913 - 1985) Mother and Child signed and dated 1976 (lower right) oil on canvas 16” x 20” (41 cm x 51 cm) As one of the country’s revered 13 Moderns, Galo B. Ocampo paved the way for the flourishing of modern art in the Philippines. As an artist, Ocampo first did stage backdrops for Associated Artists, a collective headed by Fernando Poe Sr. Ocampo was eventually offered a curatorship position at the Presidential Museum at the Malacañang Palace, and was layered appointed as the director of the National Museum. Ocampo was among the groundbreaking visionaries that sought to reshape and progress the world of Philippine art during his era. Together with fellow artists Victorio Edades and Carlos “Botong” Francisco, Ocampo sought to reinvigorate the local art scene by subverting the dominant genre of Academic Conservatism. Ocampo introduced to the local scene the core tenets of Modernism, which itself was an amalgamation of numerous western styles such as cubism and surrealism. But despite its foreign origins, Ocampo was able to create distinctly local and indigenous scenes that eventually captured the hearts and minds of established patrons and commoners alike. In this piece, Ocampo presents us with an undoubtedly Filipino subject-matter—the mother and child. Ocampo’s central figures are rendered in his own unique artistic style, a combination of soft yet vibrant colors integrated with rigid angles and poses—a treatment that is indicative of Ocampo modernist leanings. His background elements are relatively more abstract, effectively taking cue from the school of Expressionism. Yet, what makes this piece so captivating is that it exemplifies the Filipino spirit of creativity and ingenuity. Despite its seemingly distant and remote roots, Ocampo was able to masterfully mold and shape his influences into something that is uniquely his own.

Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity with control no. 93-0775 issued by the National Museum of the Philippines and signed by Dean Jose Joya, Chairman. The surrealist landscape on which this penitent seeks to gain divine favor, his face covered in shame, head garlanded by a mock crown of thorns, arms outstretched as if to mimic the crucified, hearkens to Ocampo’s earlier flagellants standing in the midst of the postwar apocalypse for which he is best known.

            Est: ₱160,000 - ₱180,000

This dazzling painting is from the period of Galo Ocampo's first one-man show in 1973, a most belated event considering that the artist had already achieved renown decades earlier as a member of the "Triumvirate" of modern art together with Victorio Edades and Botong Francisco. The surreal scene is reminiscent of Ocampo's post-apocalyptic reflections on the devastation wreaked by the Second World War. It also pays homage to Ocampo's field work in Palawan where he explored the Tabon Caves, and saw the ever-shifting colors of its stalagmite formations.
