    MITCH O'CONNELL (1961-) "Know Your Anger's Name." Album cover design for the single of the same title by the alternative rock group The Hedonists, released by Homestead Records, 1993. Pen, ink, and gouache on thin board. 480x700 mm; 19x27 1/2 inches, on 22 1/4x29-inch sheet. Signed "M. O'C" and dated [19]92 in upper right image. Tipped to board and archivally matted; framed. Provenance: Bess Cutler Gallery; Private collection, New York. Mitch O'Connell is recognized as a leader of the "Lowbrow" art movement. Incorporating Pop Art imagery, his work is inspired by comics, pin-ups, and kitsch, resulting in an aesthetic that is grounded in vintage, yet with a cool, contemporary edge. His work has been published in leading magazines and newspapers, such as Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, Newsweek, Time, The New York Times, and The Village Voice. Advertising campaigns for major companies from McDonalds to Coca-Cola have featured his illustrations and he has designed album covers and posters for bands like The Ramones, Weezer, and No Doubt. His popular tattoo designs, which grace the walls of tattoo parlors and the skin of their clientele, have been compiled and published into two volumes.

    Pencil and Indian ink on cardboard. Cm 73x54. Signed and dated 1992. Great condition. His art has been published by Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Spin, The New York Times, Time, Playboy, Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker etc. He iss also a sometime tattoo artist. O’Connell has designed his share of record sleeves and band merch, too—Supersuckers, Ramones and Less Than Jake among them. In that vein there are also plenty of celebrity representations: Foo Fighters, Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Peewee Herman, Mr. T, Jayne Mansfield.

    Hilary Barta and Mitch O'Connell A Benefit Portfolio In Defense of the First Amendment Original Art (CBLDF, 1987). Hilary Barta began his career inking at Marvel Comics and later for First Comics and Eclipse. His wonderfully cartoonish style is clearly represented here as inked by Mitch O'Connell. It is crafted in ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 13.75". Signed in the lower image area. There is light toning and corner wear, with some production tape in the top margin, otherwise, in Excellent condition.
