Daphne Odjig Sold at Auction Prices

Wall painter, Illustrator, Painter, b. 1919 - d. 2016

Canadian artist Daphne Odjig is a descendant of the Potawatomi tribe, which is part of the Great Lakes Tree Fires tribal circle. Inspired by Cornelius Kreighoff, early Daphne Odjig paintings were natural landscapes of Canada. Later, during the 1950s, she viewed a series of abstract and cubist paintings at the Royal Ontario Museum and gained an interest in the techniques of Pablo Picasso.

Daphne Odjig's art includes a collection of paintings depicting Nanabush legends; these original artworks were bought by the Federal Department of Cultural Affairs. In 2005, forty years of limited edition Daphne Odjig art prints were exhibited at the Kamloops Art Gallery in British Columbia. Daphne Odjig prints for sale may include pieces from her Series of the North and Jerusalem Series. Daphne Odjig is a Canadian First Nations artist from the Odawa-Potawatomi nation. The artist is commonly associated with her contribution to the Woodland school of painters, a group of indigenous painters whose work can be characterized by bold colors, abstract imagery, and solid black outlines. Many of her works explore indigenous identity through reflections of colonial history, indigenous mythology, and landscapes of rural Canada. Born on September 11, 1919 on Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, Canada, she developed an interest in the arts from a young age. At the outbreak of World War II she moved to Toronto to work in factories, studying the work held at the Royal Ontario Museum and local art galleries in her spare time. After the end of the war, she relocated to Manitoba where she worked on sketches of members of the Cree nation and founded the Professional Native Indian Artists Association, a group dedicated to supporting indigenous artists. Shortly thereafter, she became involved with Woodland painters and developed her signature geometric style. Odjig died on October 1, 2016 in Kelowna, Canada. Her works are currently held in the collections of the University of Lethbridge Art Collection, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and the Nickle Arts Museum at the University of Calgary among others.
