        DESCRIPTION: William Rudolph O'Donovan (American, 1844-1920). Bronze bas-relief plaques of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both with artist's monogram and shamrock mark and dated "1880". Washington plaque also marked "From the Houdon [Jean Antoine Houdon] Life Cast of Washington". Abraham Lincoln also marked "From the Volk [Douglas Stephen Volk] Life Cast of Washington". Each framed in a gold leaf frame with an ornate eagle at the top center. William Rudolph O'Donovan was a self-taught sculptor and painter who was born in Preston County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1844. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and later opened a studio in New York. He was best known for his public memorials such as the bas relief panels of President Lincoln and General Grant at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch, Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn. PROVENANCE: Owned by Charles Witmer (1862-1925), a Federal Judge who served from 1911 to 1925 in Dauphin County. MEASUREMENTS: Each 17-7/8" x 16-1/4". Overall with frame 28" x 22". CONDITION: Lincoln plaque's frame with a loose eagle.
