        Pneu Vélo Michelin. 1912.

Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: “Although Michelin frequently advertised its tires as le meilleur, le moins cher (the best, the least expensive), they generally were not cheaper than the competition. In this image, a jaunty Bibendum smokes his cigar while riding a bicycle with one leg flung over the handlebars. The cigar was such an intrinsic part of his character that when the Michelin brothers copyrighted Bibendum, in 1908, the legal paperwork specifically included it. Artists created more than twenty thousand images of him between 1898 and 1930, many showing him with the cigar” (Discount, p. 121). (Art Deco; Bicycles)

Moullot, Paris DESCRIPTION: O’Galop is, of course, the artist who gave Michelin the beloved character of Bibendum, who is still in use today. Here, he creates a memorably funny image for another French tire company that manufactures and sells in Russia. A bear in racing goggles is ensconced in a tire that rolls easily through the snowy Russian woods—much to the aggravation of the local inhabitants. (Art Nouveau; Automobiles; Animals; Dogs)

Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: “Bibendum’s ride over a rocky road underscores the claim that Michelin tires can withstand even the bumpiest roads. The pictured road marker is a reference to the Petition to Number the Roads, Michelin’s 1912 campaign to bring order to the roadways of France; on March 17, 1913, the nation’s Department of Public Works passed legislation to number every public thoroughfare. By 1926 Michelin was publishing France’s first regional guides, boosting tourism and further helping to coordinate the use of the road network” (Discount, p. 129). (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)

ARTIST: O’GALOP (Marius Rossillon, 1867-1946) SIZE: 31 x 39 1/2 in./78.8 x 100.3 cm PRINTER: G. Gerin Fils, Dijon-Paris DESCRIPTION: “An accomplished French cartoonist, Marius Rossillon created comic strips for the prominent turn-of-the-century publisher L’Imagerie d’Epinal. In this image, O’Galop, as he was widely known, labels Michelin’s competitor John Body Dunlop ‘deaf, dumb, and blind.’ Dunlop’s bearded visage is reflected on the rear of the automobile as he bends over to examine the Michelin tires. He gasps, noticing the tire is about to roll over the tail of an unsuspecting dog. The artist made two versions of this poster, integrating the present image into a larger scene in which a Parisian gendarme directs a horde of theatergoers across the street” (Discount, p. 64). Le Pneu Michelin / Nunc est bibendum. 1898.

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

ARTIST: O'GALOP (Marius Rossillon, 1867-1946) SIZE: 13 3/4 x 19 in./35 x 48.2 cm PRINTER: Imp. L. Revon, Paris DESCRIPTION: This is the very first poster to introduce the Michelin Man to the world. In 1894, while attending the Universal and Colonial Exposition in Lyon, Edouard and André Michelin noticed a stack of tires that resembled a figure without arms. Four years later, they met with O’Galop, who showed them a rejected image intended for a Munich brewery of a large figure raising a glass of beer and quoting the phrase from Horace: “Nunc est bibendum” (Now let’s drink). André suggested to create a figure made from tires, and thus, Bibendum was born. But instead of toasting with beer, he raises a goblet overflowing with nails, broken glass, and other road debris, insinuating that Michelin tires can withstand dangerous obstacles on the road. For the next fifteen years, this image was used to promote Michelin tires; further iterations included new products on the table. Rare!! (Art Nouveau; Automobiles)

Chaix, Paris DESCRIPTION: In 1896, O’Galop created the first Bibendum design (see PAI-LXXXVIII, 17). About to down a cup full of rusty nails to prove his strength, the tire-character was paired with the venerable Latin phrase “Nunc est Bibendum!” (Let us drink!). Henceforth, the Michelin mascot was known as Bibendum. Here, we see him in a much more casual atmosphere, puffing on his characteristic cigar and cruising off, handsfree, on a bike outfitted with Michelin tires. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)

Le Pneu Michelin / Nunc est bibendum. 1896.

        Est: $10,000 - $12,000

ARTIST: O'GALOP (Marius Rossillon, 1867-1946) SIZE: 47 x 63 in./119.5 x 160 cm PRINTER: Imp. Cornille & Serre, Paris DESCRIPTION: This is the first of all the Bibendum designs. In 1896, O'Galop showed that Michelin tires can take it by personifying a tire about to down a cup of rusty nails and broken bottles, presumably with no ill effects—and for the heading, he mockingly used the venerable Latin phrase, “Let us drink.” Many people apparently believed that “Bibendum” was the figure’s name, and that’s how he’s been known in France for over a century. It’s one of the world’s longest lasting advertising images, and one still enjoying widespread popularity today. The company was started by André and Edouard Michelin in 1892 when they obtained a patent for a pneumatic bicycle tire. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Automobiles; Bicycles)
