                Jan. 09, 2025

George Ohr (1857 - 1918) Pottery Cake Plate

                Est: $600 - $1,200

George Ohr, "The Mad Potter of Biloxi". Here we have a rare piece, a standing cake plate! This is one configuration very hard to find, indeed. Though it went through some trauma in its life and has been repaired it is still a remarkable find. Vases, cups, pitchers etc are much more common. The top was broken in several pieces, carefully put back together and stealthily glazed, matching perfectly. The honeycomb design was very hard to reconfigure and match but it was done as well as anyone could. Clearly stamped G. E. Ohr, Biloxi on the base. It measures 12 1/2" across, 6 1/4" tall.

                Jan. 09, 2025

                George Ohr (1857 - 1918) Pottery Pitcher

                Est: $400 - $800

George Ohr, "The Mad Potter of Biloxi". Here we have one of his pieces, though repaired, still a wonderful work of the potter's art. A pitcher In green and neutral tones with applied strap handle. Clearly stamped on both the base and on the side. The repair was done well, hardly noticeable around the rim from the exterior, somewhat more noticeable from the inside as the glaze from the handle around to the spout inside is slightly different and you can see the hairline at the rim where it was damaged. 5" tall x 4 1/8" across.

                Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Ribbed vase with ruffled rim, glazed with speckled interior, stamped G.E. OHR, Biloxi, Miss. h. 4 w. 3 in. George Edgar Ohr (1857-1918), the ÒMad Potter of BiloxiÓ, was an artist with a vision that was ahead of his time. Although active from 1879 until around 1910, it was not until his pottery was rediscovered half a century after his death that Ohr began to enjoy the reputation he felt he deserved. Ohr studied under Joseph Fortune Meyer, of Newcomb College Art Pottery, and moved freely between New Orleans, Louisiana and Biloxi, Mississippi for much of his career. Through his association with Meyer and extensive travels to attend fairs and expositions, Ohr was exposed to some of the best work of the Arts & Crafts movement and the American Renaissance. His work, however, would evolve technique in a way that set him apart from his contemporaries.
