Ida Ten Eyck O'Keeffe (American, 1889-1961) Aquarium, 1927 Oil on canvas 18 x 22 inches (45.7 x 55.9 cm) Signed lower right: Ida O'Keeffe Signed and dated on the reverse: Ida Ten Eyck O'Keeffe 1927 PROVENANCE: Owings-Dewey Fine Art Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Private collection, acquired from the above; Bill Hood & Sons, Delray Beach, Florida; Dr. Lukas C. Brun, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, acquired from the above 2017. EXHIBITED: Opportunity Gallery, New York, 1927; Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, May 1-December 11, 2017. LITERATURE: E.A. Jewell, "Scolding 'Moderns' a Bit: So Many Young Artists Seem to Be Following Leads of Fashion -- Several Exhibitions," New York Times, New York, December 25, 1927; S. Canterbury, E. Pinon, F. Soriano, and L. Stephenson, Ida O'Keefe: Escaping Georgia's Shadow, exhibition catalogue, New Haven, Connecticut, p. 34, fig. 9, illustrated. In the history of American modernism, Ida O'Keeffe has been overshadowed by her celebrated sister Georgia O'Keeffe. Nonetheless, Ida O'Keeffe developed a distinct style, separate from her sister, emphasizing line and color, with her later works taking on a regionalist tone. After receiving her MFA from Columbia University, Ida began to show in several New York galleries. In 1927, she was highlighted at the Opportunity Gallery, where she dropped her last name in attempt to differentiate herself from her older sister. Ida unveiled five works including the present work, Aquarium. A New York Times critic commented on the show, "among the best pictures are those of Ida Ten Eyck. Her ‘Aquarium' this writer at least would much prefer to a real fish tank." In 2018, the Dallas Museum of Art hosted for this undervalued artist her first solo exhibition, in which Aquarium illustrated her early career. A copy of the exhibition catalogue accompanies the present work. HID01801242017
