        MINE OKUBO (NY/CA, 1912-2001) Correspondence and Graphic Art Cards from Japanese-American Female Artist Mine Okuba, including: (10) Christmas Cards with original artwork, (14) Holiday Cards with prints; an original woodblock, an original watercolor, (2) large prints, (3) exhibition flyers, (5) notes/letters, copy of newspaper article, etc. Sent to Mr. & Mrs. Hyman Sandow of 2051 St. Raymond Ave, Bronx, NY. Circa 1949-1960. Hyman Sandow (1904-1987) was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts, friends with the likes of George Gershwin, and heavily involved in helping refugees from the war, of which Okubo was counted, having been interred in Arizona for the duration.

        Miné Okubo (CA, 1912-2001), Woman with Flowers oil on canvas, signed and dated at lower left "Okubo '94," unframed - but with painted sides. 32.5 x 30.25 in. Born in California to Japanese parents, Okubo is perhaps best known for her tireless work documenting and sharing accounts of her experiences in the Japanese American internment camps following the outbreak of WWII. After receiving her bachelor and master degrees from the University of California in Berkeley, she studied art in Europe on a fellowship. Upon her return to the states she was commissioned by the Federal Arts Program for several projects, including one with Diego Rivera. By the mid-1950s, she settled in Greenwich Village.
