Claes Oldenburg Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, Illustrator, b. 1929 -

(born 28 January 1929 Stockholm, Sweden) American artist. Son of a diplomat, Claes Thure Oldenburg moved to various places as a child before his family finally settled in Chicago in 1936. He attended Yale University from 1946 to 1950 and went on to study art at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1950 to 1954. He opened a studio in 1953 and became a United States citizen that same year. In 1956 he moved to New York City where he met other artists including George Brecht, Allan Kaprow, and George Segal. Oldenburg had his first one-man exhibit in 1959 at the Judson Gallery and at Cooper Union. At the time he was working on drawings, collages, and sculptures made out of papier-mâché. In 1961 Oldenburg started creating some of his most well known works out of plaster and enamel, including Two Cheeseburgers, with Everything. The same year he opened The Store in his studio, in which he created exaggerated models of common store items. This commentary on America’s consumer culture helped label him as a pop artist by 1962. At the same time Oldenburg started participating in performance art, most notably the Happenings with other artists such as Jim Dine, Red Grooms, and Robert Whitman. An active year for Oldenburg, in 1962 he also began recreating commonplace objects such as a toilet or light switch but altered its size and texture, thus turning convention on its head and presenting the everyday in a whole new perspective. In 1967 he created his first public monument, the short-lived performance piece Placid Civil Monument, in Central Park. Oldenburg continues to create public monuments in the form of permanent large-scale projects, including Clothespin (1976) and Knife Ship (1985) alongside fellow artist and wife Coosje van Bruggen, whom he married in 1977. He had a solo exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1969 and in 1995 the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Guggenheim Museum in New York held a retrospective of his work. He lives in New York.

Notation: Monogrammed, titled and inscribed on the underside: COL (ligiert) AKRON KhaKiQ 1#. Prototype for the edition of 12 plastic and 12 rubber copies. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from the artist) Soft Sculptures The sculpture by Claes Oldenburg from Kasper König's collection takes up the subject of the 'Inverted Q', which can be found in monumental size in the collection of the Akron Art Museum, Akron, Ohio and in the sculpture park of the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach. Conceptually, the work is based on Oldenburg's Soft Sculptures, which in the early 1960s reproduced everyday objects, such as pieces of cake or ice-cream cones, enlarged in soft materials. He was able to make these out of fabric with the help of his wife at the time, Patty. A Q for Ohio In 1972, Oldenburg was invited by the collector couple Mary and Louis Myers to design a sculpture for the park next to the library. The proposal to choose a letter as a motif in the context of the immediate location was accepted. The letter Q was chosen not least because of its tyre-like shape, as Akron is known as an industrial location for the tyre industry. Oldenburg comments on the form: 'It was a shape that had grown out of some earlier drawings,' and over the years, 'it has been associated as a kind of navel form.' After two years of collaboration with the technicians of the local companies, the realisation came that a realisation in rubber was not possible at the time due to the technology still under development. Oldenburg changes the material to concrete in order to produce the monumental version in four copies. By this time, the Akron Library had decided in favour of a different sculpture. The collector couple Myers acquired the first version from the artist and donated it to the local museum 'Inverted Q', where it is on display today. Execution in rubber Oldenburg recalls the creation process: 'I had wanted it to be rubber because that's the main industry in Akron [.] But I realised I couldn't cast a sculpture in rubber more than 18 inches high.' However, the artist did not abandon the realisation in plastic and created smaller models in two versions: twelve pieces in rubber and twelve pieces in plastic. Oldenburg's work executed here demonstrates the artist's joy in experimenting with the creation of the large sculpture and the confrontation and process of finding creative colours. Measurement: 33,5 x 48cm. Notation: Monogrammed and dated lower right: CO. 77. As well as titled in the centre: "Pool Balls". Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: - Kasper König Collection, Berlin (directly from the artist) Exhibitions: - Gallery Thomas Fischer, Berlin 2018 "Skulptur Projekte Münster" The exhibition series 'Skulptur Projekte Münster', which is continued every ten years, shows numerous artistic positions and interventions in public space in 1977. The exhibition was preceded by a debate in 1973 in the course of the installation of the sculpture ''Drei rotierende Quadrate'' (Three Rotating Squares) by George Rickey. In response, Klaus Bußmann devised an exhibition concept with Kasper König and König was responsible for the project area of sculptures in public space, for which he selected eight artists. König's many years of residence in New York and Halifax led him to select five artists living in the USA, including Claes Oldenburg. Claes Oldenburg's memories Oldenburg describes the realisation of the project as follows: 'The next thing that Kasper and I did together was in 1976. I had become friends with Coosje van Bruggen who had been a curator at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and we worked together and began to live together. In 1977 we were married. It was big year, because it was also the year of the Münster Sculpture Exhibition, Kasper's first in his hometown. Coosje and I developed the Pool Balls, the first work with Coosje that we did entirely together. We studied the history of Münster and its siege by Groningen - Coosje's birthplace in Holland. Cannonballs from that battle were found embedded all over Münster. We transformed them into pool balls and came up with a sculpture that was eventually only three balls. It was supposed to be more balls, but Münster only had the money for three, which worked out okay. They were very large, people played with them, painted them, and sat on them. One artist built a house around them but they haven't rolled away from where we placed them.' Positioning at the Aasee The drawing for the positioning of the 'Giant Pool Balls', 1977 at the Aasee in Münster shows the possibilities discussed in the context of the project. While in the foreground the lake extends in gestural strokes with a sailing boat travelling on it, the bright 'Giant Pool Balls' can be found again on the hill in the form of spheres. Another pool ball is positioned on the shore to the right, where the final location was also chosen. The work demonstrates Oldenburg's close relationship with König, who has regularly collaborated with the artist since the exhibition in Stockholm in 1966 and as director of the Mouse Museum in Kassel in 1972. New York and König At the beginning of the 1960s, Claes Oldenburg created a place for himself in the canon of Pop Art with his oversized everyday objects made of papier-mâché and his Soft Sculptures. In 1965, Kasper König travelled to New York for the London gallery owner Robert Frazer, where he worked in galleries and as a consultant. In order to obtain a permanent work permit in the form of a green card, König is employed as the American representative for the Modern Museet in Stockholm. In September 1966, Oldenburg was given the exhibition 'Skulpturer och teckningar, 1963-1966' at the Moderna Museet Stockholm, which the 23-year-old Kasper König curated on behalf of Pontus Hultén. This marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship that would lead to numerous collaborations. At the beginning of the 1970s, the relationship grew closer. Oldenburg begins to sort through his documents and scripts for performances, which are later published by König under the title 'Raw Notes' at Nova Scotia College Press. In 1972 König becomes director of Claes Oldenburg's 'Mouse Museum' at documenta 5 in Kassel and, together with the artist, selects 367 objects to be catalogued for the museum. For the premiere of Skulptur Projekte Münster in 1977, Oldenburg installed his 'Pool Balls', which still stand at the Aasee in Münster today and at the same time established his artistic collaboration with Coosje van Bruggen. The close connection between Oldenburg and König is evident in solo exhibitions at Portikus (1992) and Museum Ludwig (2012). 'Ghost Wardrobe for M.M.' from the Kasper König Collection symbolises the friendship between curator and artist that has lasted over 50 years. Popular subject of Pop Art Claes Oldenburg's work is presented at the Sidney Jannis Gallery in New York in December 1967. Under the title 'Homage to Marilyn Monroe', the exhibition shows works by Rauschenberg, Rotella, Wesselmann and Dalì, among others, as well as Oldenburg's first metal sculpture Lipstick. The sculpture is modified and further developed by the artist into the final work 'Ghost Wardrobe for M.M.': Three metal hangers are suspended from screwed-together water pipes, on which hang the clothes that the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe once wore, outlined by a string. Not only is the white dress from the film 'The 7 Year Itch' (1955) indicated, but also the swimming costume from the last film 'Misfits' (1961). The evening dress that Monroe wore to the birthday party of American President John F. Kennedy in 1962 also hangs on a hanger as a third 'garment'. The absence of the film star is emphasised once again by tin pumps standing on the floor with balls on the toes and rusty nails as heels. The floating myth of Monroe Diametrically opposed to the well-known designs by Warhol or Hamilton, Oldenburg captures Marilyn Monroe, whose films and physicality are still considered a projection screen for Hollywood and sexuality, as a fleeting memory. Oldenburg emphasises the melancholy and tragedy of the actress, which always accompanied Monroe, in the sculpture by showing only three silhouettes as an empty form and shell. Oldenburg's work alludes to the idea that although Marilyn Monroe is no longer physically present, her presence can still be felt - like a ghost - and immortalises the cinematic sex symbol as a mystery that still fascinates today.
