Amron Omar Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1957 -

Amron Omar was among the earliest result of Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM). The Art and Design Faculty students in the 1970s were greatly influenced by western style painting as their lecturers were trained in the West. There were two events that changed the course of Malaysian art during this period: the 'Kongres Kebudayaan Kebangsaan' in 1971 (National Culture Congress) and 'Seminar Akar-Akar Pribumi' (Seminar on Roots of the Native) in 1979 which increased the interest among local artists towards the aesthetics of Islamic and traditional arts, particularly Amron's interest in projecting a narrative through the glorious movements of silat since 1980 as a celebration of Malay culture and heroism.

More than 150 works from Amron Omar's Pertarungan series over three decades were displayed at the National Visual Arts Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2012. He worked briefly for an advertising company upon graduation but decided to paint full-time in 1983, specialising in portraits for royalty, dignitaries, corporate captains of industry and also the commoner. He won the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition in 1982 with a self-portrait.

        AMRON OMAR : Pertarungan, 1986

        Est: RM16,000 - RM30,000

Born in Kedah, Amron Omar (b. 1957) graduated from Mara Institute of Technology (now UiTM) in 1980. In 1982, he won the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists exhibition. He won the Silver Award in the 1985 Sime Darby Art Asia competition. He has also been exhibited internationally, most notably in The Contemporary Asian Art Show in Fukuoka, Japan (1980), ASEAN Mobile Show in Jakarta (1981), and Contemporary Paintings of Malaysia in Los Angeles, California (1988). In 2012, the National Art Gallery of Malaysia held a major solo exhibition for him, where over 150 works were displayed. Amron’s rise to prominence is significant because it took place during a period of Islamic revival. Primarily a figurative artist, Amron was able to circumvent the Islamic dictate against the representation of living beings by selecting a topic that necessitated the illumination of the human form. The work of Amron Omar also describes the cultural attributes of the traditional Malay community in the current life scenario. The success of the works of Amron Omar has been able to give the local character a sincere appreciation even though he presents it using a western frame. A harmonious union between the oriental value and his personality has been adapted into a wise, mature, and impressive nature.

While Amron has developed his art largely from within Malaysia, Suryodarmo has made Germany her second home, living and working between Indonesia and Europe. Amron’s two-dimensional paintings and drawings trace a 30-year-long focus on the subject matter of silat, the traditional Malay martial art of self-defence, of which Amron is a practitioner, and of which his father was a noted master. Amron Omar’s work highlights the Malay customs that are concerned with the movements in the Malay martial art. This is shown through the space composition and can be viewed at eye- level. The dominant subjects in this work are the two male objects who wear tied clothing. Their position also suggests that they are engaged in a battle. Through this painting, Amron Omar attempts to convey the value of silat, which is the traditional Malay martial art that is rich in traditions and cultural values. Amron Omar has successfully conveyed the message on the beauty and power of martial arts in the custom and tradition of the Malays.

Life's an unending struggle, even in the best of times. One can never predict the ups and down, the thrusted blow and the lifting hand. It's life a pugilistic challenge, like in Amron Omar's eternal duel, against an imaginary shadowy foe. Amron Omar has been painting silat exponents in combat since 1980, with different poses, some dramatic, and in different media like oil on canvas, oil pastels and charcoal. It is about discipline and journey. The traditional martial art offers hundreds of different styles that tend to focus either on strikes, joint manipulation, throws, bladed weaponry, or some combination thereof. More than 150 selected works from his Pertarungan series were featured in a major solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, in 2012. More than fighting, it is about self-discipline, inner struggle, strategy. It is also about Nusantara heritage. Amron Omar won the Minor Award in the Bakat Muda Sezaman (Young Contemporary Artists) competition in 1982, with a self-portrait. After graduating from the Mara Institute of Technology, he joined an advertising company briefly, before going fulltime into art, keeping busy with portrait commissions, including from the Sultan of Brunei.

On offer here is a figurative pastel drawing of a young woman dressed in contemporary white blouse and blue jeans named Farah as the title suggests. Seated demurely, this elegant drawing is a shift from the masculinity of silat warriors, a testament to his flair in painting the human figure. The late Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal once remarked on Amron's ability to capture the human anatomy when viewing his first work from his iconic Pertarungan (The Duel) series in 1980: "From the world of advanced arrangement of forms that is distinguished from other painters of human figures in other countries, making him significant among other anatomical painters in this country. His paintings represent his good training." Amron Omar was among the earliest result of Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM).
