    • ROBERT JENKINS ONDERDONK (American 1852-1917) A PAINTING, "Water Carrier - San Pedro Springs," SAN ANTONIO,
      Sep. 25, 2021

ROBERT JENKINS ONDERDONK (American 1852-1917) A PAINTING, "Water Carrier - San Pedro Springs," SAN ANTONIO,

      Est: $1,000 - $1,500

ROBERT JENKINS ONDERDONK (American 1852-1917) A PAINTING, "Water Carrier - San Pedro Springs," SAN ANTONIO, watercolor on paper, unsigned, 6 3/4" x 9 1/4", framed, 14 1/2" x 16 1/4". Note: The work from the prestigious Texas collection of John Steinfeldt, Dean of Texas Pianists, and husband to Cecilia Neuheisel Steinfeldt, First Lady of Texas Art, author of The Onderdonks, A Family of Texas Painters. This view of San Pedro Springs shows a landscape with bridge in the central background and a winding spring. At the left of the painting a small pioneer structure with red roof, and at center a man fills a water barrel that sits atop a mule cart parked in the stream. The present work is a classic San Antonio, Texas view that begs to have a comparison drawn with John Constable's The Hay Wain. Though painted nearly one hundred years apart, the two paintings evoke similar feelings of nostalgia, a longing to return to the simplicity of the past, a celebration of man working in communion with the land, and lush with views of pristine landscape, leaving the viewer to study the Texas landscape colloquially dubbed, "The Texas Hay Wain," with a keen eye. Provenance: Gift from the artist to John Steinfeldt, Houston, Texas

      Robert Jenkins Onderdonk O/B Landscape

      Est: $4,000 - $6,000

This lot features an oil on board landscape painting with a house by Robert Jenkins Onderdonk (American 1852 - 1917). An important artist in the first stage of Texas art, Onderdonk was a long-time art teacher in San Antonio and Dallas, where he formed art associations and leagues; for his contributions to the culture of art and painting in Texas he is known as the "Dean of Texas's Artists." Onderdonk's masterpiece, the 1903 painting Fall of the Alamo, was displayed at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and is now held in the Texas State Archives. Occupying central position in the painting is Davy Crockett, a depiction reproduced countless times in print; Crockett is portrayed in iconic style, "swinging his flintlock over his head to club the Mexicans advancing through a hanging cloud of gun smoke." According to Fisk's "A History of Texas Artists", he would have been ranked one of America's finest artists if he had spent more time painting rather than teaching. Signed "R.J. Onderdonk" lower left register. Measures 12" x 10". This piece comes from the Dickenson Estate of Knoxville, Tennessee. See Photos for Details. Shipping Available.

      Est: $7,500 - $10,000

ROBERT JENKINS ONDERDONK (1852-1917) Untitled Bluebonnet Landscape Watercolor 12in. x 17.5in. Signed lower left A dramatic soft palette of pinks, oranges, and yellows mark the sky in this early morning bluebonnet watercolor. The bluebonnets are a light powder blue in the midground, to a soft baby blue in the foreground. Robert Onderdonk completed a similar watercolor titled Figures in the Field illustrated in the book The Onderdonks: A Family of Texas Painters, by Cecilia Steinfeldt, published for the San Antonio Museum by Trinity University Press. It is not far-fetched to think that Robert painted this watercolor with his son Julian painting alongside him. It is well documented that Julian was very homesick for his family while in New York, and that he and his father shared a close and special relationship. Provenance: California antiques dealer
