BIOGRAPHY: George Bernard O'Neill was a prolific Irish genre painter, from 1859 a member of the Cranbrook Colony of artists.O'Neill was born in Dublin in Ireland, the ninth of fifteen children of a Dublin Ordnance clerk. He arrived in England in 1837, went to school in Woolwich and was accepted at the Royal Academy Schools in 1845. He was a successful student, regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1847 onwards, and gained a reputation as a painter of charming narrative scenes. 'The Foundling', exhibited in 1852, demonstrated his awareness of works by Old Masters combined with the appealing subject of an orphaned child.O' Neill's artistic manner was similar to that of Thomas Webster and Frederick Daniel Hardy. The close relationship between O'Neill and Hardy can be judged from their little painting 'The Surprise' where Hardy painted the interior and O'Neill - the figure (Wolverhampton Art Gallery).Scenes of rural life - virtuous, innocent, sometimes slightly comical, sometimes sentimental, painted on small domestic scale, appealed to middle-class customers. The height of his success was in the 1850s-1870s, when his works were eagerly collected by Midlands industrialists and the entrepreneurs of other industrial regions of the country. This feeling of public success was expressed in O'Neill's painting 'Public Opinion', which had been shown at the Royal Academy in 1863 (at present at the Leeds City Art Gallery).O'Neill also kept a home and studio in London, where he spent the winter months participating in the capital's artistic life. In the 1870s, along with George Henry Boughton, he became friends with James McNeill Whistler and offered him moral support during the years 1877-78, when Whistler sued the critic John Ruskin for libel. Although O'Neill's artistic views were in many ways contrary to these of Whistler, they both believed that the artist's aesthetic purpose gave validity to a work of art.

      Est: €2,500 - €3,500

George Bernard O'Neill (1828-1917) Picking Grapes (1898) oil on board signed lower left and dated (18)'98 h:45.70  w:35.20 cm. Provenance: Richard Green Gallery, London (label verso); Private Collection Accomplished and prolific, O'Neill was best known for his highly detailed genre and figure paintings, which typically featured children and animals. Born in Dublin, he exhibited over seventy works at London's Royal Academy, and his paintings survive in more than 16 public collections, e.g. A Deathbed Scene (National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin), and The Foundling (Tate Britain, 1852). His narrative suggests children leaving their game of hoop and stick, to help the old man, so he need not descend from the ladder as he picks grapes. Meticulously depicted, the open gate hints that the girl has wandered into the scene, where the boy already has his basket lined and filled with a vine leaf and grapes. Plants are used symbolically; to represent youth and innocence (the daisy, between the children), and old age (the autumn leaves), soon to be swept aside with the besom that leans up in the foreground. The terrier, representing faithfulness, observes the scene. The leaded fenestration and good clothing, suggest an English rather than Irish setting. Claudia Kinmonth, October 2018

George Bernard O'Neill (British, 1828-1917) Reaping Time Reaping Time signed 'GBONeill' (lower right); signed and inscribed with artist's address (on the reverse) oil on canvas 77 x 99cm (30 5/16 x 39in). Footnotes Exhibited London, Royal Academy, 1878, no. 1013. The ninth of fifteen children, George Bernard O'Neill was born on 17th July 1828. In the late 1830's his family left Dublin and settled in England where his father had a job as an Ordnance storekeeper at the Woolwich Arsenal. George enrolled at the RA schools and first exhibited there in 1847. This was the first of an unbroken run of Royal Academy exhibits right up until 1893, bar 1858, the year after he was married to Emma Stuart Callcott, the cousin of the artist John Callcott Horsley, RA. In 1860 the O'Neills moved out of London, spending the summer months in Cranbrook, to join Frederick Daniel Hardy, who had settled there six years earlier. Within relatively easy reach of the metropolis, due to the new railway, this small village in Kent provided the perfect combination of rural subject matter, clean air and the chance for this group of painters to form a closely knit, almost familial colony. O'Neill leased 'Old Wisley' and the artists shared a studio on the High Street. They were soon to be joined by Thomas Webster, RA; George Henry Boughton and Augustus Mulready were also frequent visitors. Using mainly family, friends and local models, O'Neill produced narrative works which tended to be sentimental but proved popular with the Victorian public. In Reaping Time, which was shown at the Royal Academy in 1878, the farmer or possibly grain merchant is testing the quality of the corn which has been harvested from the field beyond. The sample has been brought to him by the young girl who has discarded her hat, having come in from the field. This age old ritual is given modern relevance by the copy of the Kentish Express which lies open, and behind more everyday activities take place: a mother suckles her baby, an old lady feeds chickens and in the room behind the figures on the bench a customer prepares to have a shave. The setting for this picture is almost certainly Old Wisley. The distinctive windows with diamond panes appear in many of the artist's works of this period, and the device of the open door allowing an additional narrative beyond the main event was a common device frequently employed in genre pictures at this time. O'Neill continued to divide his time between London and Kent, and counted amongst his friends Whistler who he supported during the infamous libel case against John Ruskin in 1878. He died in London on 23rd September 1917.

He was a member of the Cranbrook Colony, a group of artists who settled in Cranbrook, Kent from 1854 onwards and were inspired by seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish painters. They have been referred to as 'genre' painters as they tended to paint scenes of everyday life that they saw around them, typically scenes of domestic life; cooking and washing, children playing and other family activities. The popularity of these scenes led to success for the artist in the 1850s-1870s, when his works were eagerly collected by entrepreneurs and industrialists of the area. The artist expressed his pleasure at this recognition by the public in his painting 'Public Opinion', which was shown at the Royal Academy in 1863 (at present at the Leeds City Art Gallery).
