Brustportrait einer nach rechts gewandten Dame in pudrigem Kleid mit Sonnenhut und Gaze um das Gesicht. Provenienz: Sammlung Christopher Wood. Auktion Christie’s, 24. Oktober 1997, Lot 85. Privatbesitz, Großbritannien. Anmerkung: Über die Akademien in München, Rom und Neapel und Reisen nach Ägypten und in die USA gelangte Oppenheimer nach England, wo er zwischen 1896 und 1908 in seinem Londoner Atelier malte. Dort porträtierte er diese Frau mit Hut und Schleier, die an einem Zweig riecht. Neben dieser eleganten Dame malte Oppenheimer auch Berühmtheiten wie Albert Einstein sowie weitere schöne Frauen der europäischen High Society sowie unzählige Film- und Theaterschauspielerinnen. Oil/canvas. 32,5 x 51 cm. Lo. le. sign. Jos. Oppenheimer. Zustand Few inconspicuous rest, relined to the margins. - Portrait, landscape and still life painter. O. studied at the Munich Academy under F. Fehr, G. von Hackl and P. Hoecker. He traveled to Italy and Greece and exhibited at the Berlin Secession in 1899. In 1902 he moved to London and quickly became a portrait painter in great demand. He was able to build on this success when he returned to Berlin in 1908. O. recognized early on the threat posed by the National Socialists and returned to London as early as 1933; in 1949 he emigrated to Canada. Mus.: London (Nat. Portr. Gall.), Mannheim. An exquisite oil on canvas entitled RACING HENLEY ROYAL, attributed to German British artist Joseph Oppenheimer (1876-1966), whose work included many subjects from popular events to famous people including Albert Einstein, Otto Von Bismarck, Deborah Kerr, and countless others. A rich composition with detailed and impressive landscaping and architectural features to the background, and racing rowers depicted in the foreground, with especial emphasis on the striking red clothed coxswain seated in the lower right. Based on the Henley Royal Regatta, a rowing event established in 1839 and held annually by the town of Henley-on-Thames, England. Presented in a wooden Victorial Revival frame with a rich patina and profuse embossed decorations of flora, clamshells, and other motifs. Hanging hardware. Purchased at Bonham's, 1999.
