Orazi has created a poster that is the first to have such a curious form.” Such a different design is in perfect harmony with the opera’s plot, which takes place in Ancient Egypt during Byzantine rule. Drawn to the beautiful courtesan Thaïs, a Cenobite monk attempts to convert her from worshiping Venus to worshiping the Christian God. Ultimately, it is revealed that his interest in her is entirely rooted in lust, whereas her morals and sense of honor are far superior. (Art Nouveau; Opera)

MANUEL ORAZI (1860-1934) LIGUE VINICOLE DE FRANCE. Circa 1901. 39x54 inches, 99x137 1/4 cm. Charles Verneau, Paris. Condition A-: minor restoration along horizontal fold. Years before modern medicine could actually confirm the claims, the French regarded wine as a drink that was almost healthy, unlike distilled spirits (especially absinthe), which were considered the enemy of the working class. Such positive public perception was brought about by lobbying organizations like La Ligue Vinicole, the French Wine Guild. To make their case, they even quote Frédéric Passy, the famed economist and winner of the 1901 Nobel Peace Prize, who encouraged the French to drink "natural, healthy wine." Orazi designed posters throughout the Art Nouveau era, all of which remain striking and flamboyant. Here, he created a symbolic image of the positive attributes of wine drinking, with a woman, dressed a l'antique, sensually crushing grapes in a bowl into which a little cupid dips his arrow. Manuel Orazi (1860-1934) – Seven Original Preparatory Works for Engravings – Jewish Figures in Poland and Palestine

        Est: -

Manuel Orazi (1860-1934). Seven original preparatory works for engravings. Gouache on paper. Captioned on verso. The engravings were published in the books "Un Royaume de Dieu" (God's Kingdom) and "L'an Prochain a Jerusalem" (Next Year in Jerusalem) by brothers Jérôme et Jean Tharaud (illustrated editions published by Plon, Paris, 1933). "God's Kingdom" deals with the Jews of the East European Shtetls and "Next Year in Jerusalem" describes the state of the Jews in Palestine compared to its other national and religious groups, from a romantic perspective that glorifies the Jews' devotion to the old religion and promptly rejects the idea of a national renaissance and the chances of Zionism. Manuel Orazi (1860-1934), Illustrator and poster artist, born in Rome; his work is usually characterized by graceful art nouveau figures. These works differ greatly from his usual style, which emphasized the stylized, rounded contours of art nouveau and its tendency to draw inspiration from nature, choosing instead simple realism in the nostalgic spirit of the text. Seven sheets; approx. 23X31 cm. Good general condition. Framed. Most of the frames: 40X49 cm.

MANUEL ORAZI (1860-1934) Art Nouveau Woman with Sunflower Headdress. * Art Nouveau Woman Holding Kettle. [POSTERS]

        Est: $7,000 - $10,000

MANUEL ORAZI (1860-1934) Art Nouveau Woman with Sunflower Headdress. * Art Nouveau Woman Holding Kettle. Together, original painting and original study for unidentified projects, likely unpublished. Mixed media, including watercolor, gouache, metallic paint, and pencil on paper. The first is 630x500 mm; 24 3/4x19 1/2 inches (sheet). Firmly adhered to linen board. Signed with Orazi's decorative sigil in lower left image; not dated, though his use of this signature places it between 1900 and 1905. The second is 625x370 mm; 24 1/2x18 1/2 inches (sheet). Adhered to thick paper mount. Unsigned; not dated. Each matted and with simple gold-painted wood frames, study is missing glass. Provenance: Gallery Sixtyeight Auctions; Private collection, Toronto. The figure in the first and more finished artwork resembles Princesse Lointaine, who was famously played by Sarah Bernhardt and whose elaborate tiara adorned with lilies was immortalized and widely reproduced in imagery by poster artist Alphonse Mucha. While the sunflowers pictured here negate the likelihood of the artwork being intended as an image of the Princesse Lointaine, it certainly contains tropes and decorative elements quintessential to Orazi's oeuvre and the Art Nouveau style as a whole, such as use of sinuous curves and the intricate headdress, which he gives careful attention, likely due to his background as a jewelry designer. Orazi's jewelry was displayed at Samuel Bing's famed Maison de l'Art Nouveau in 1896, and his designs were also sold at La Maison Moderne. Though it differs in the details and overall composition, the original study bears resemblance to Orazi's famous lithograph Femme aux Orchidées (Nymph with Orchids) in its rendering of a silhouette of a woman in profile with long tendrils of hair blowing in the wind. Born in Italy, Orazi primarily worked in Paris creating graphic art in the Art Nouveau style and illustrations for advertisements, posters, calendars, books, and newspapers. Such original studies by Orazi are uncommon on the market and highly desirable.

The Maison, however, had a generally younger clientele and was more at the forefront of the movement than Bing’s. Orazi, the master lithographer and designer featured at the gallery, created one of the most brilliant masterpieces of the era to promote the gallery. The model—dance celebrity Cléo de Mérode—sits in serene stillness, surrounded by all manner of delicate object d’art, from elaborate combs to fanciful lamps, curious statues to languid glassware. These are the works of Alexander Carpenter, Maurice Dufrène, Adrien Dalpayrat, Henry van de Velde, Gustave Gurschner, and Joseph Mendes da Costa. It’s a tour de force in graphic design! Condition B+: losses, tears and creases at top and bottom margins; tape-repaired tear at right edge, slightly into image; hinged at top on verso with archival tape. Paper. Matted. Orazi was born in Rome, received his artistic training at the famed Italian printing house of Ricordi, and then moved to Paris where he achieved instant success by participating in the second exhibition at Siegfried Bing's gallery L'Art Nouveau, for which he designed Le Calendrier Fantastique. His work "explores and crosses the influences of Byzantium, Antiquity, symbolism and occultism" (Art Nouveau p. 121). Orazi went on to design this, one of his most famous posters for Bing's competitor, Julius Meyer-Graefe, who opened up La Maison Moderne in 1898. Meyer-Graefe had spent time with the avant-garde artistic community in Berlin (he had helped establish the influential magazine Pan) before he came to Paris and opened up his store dedicated to Art Nouveau finery of the day, including pottery, glass, lamps and jewelry. He employed top notch designers like Van de Velde to help him with his merchandise and called on some top poster designers, like Orazi and Maurice Biais, to create devise his advertising. This image highlights not only the extreme elegance of the women who frequented the store, but specifically draws attention to many of the fine items that were for sale, including the furniture, jewelry and bibelots. Bertrand Mothes, in his paper, "La Maison Moderne de Julius Meyer-Graefe" helps us identify these objects: "an inkwell bearing a bronze figure of Alexander Carpenter on a base designed by [Maurice] Dufrêne and made of flamed sandstone by Adrien Dalpayrat, an armchair by Van de Velde, a bronze lamp by Gustave Gurschner, a vase by Dufrêne and Dalpayrat and a monkey figurine by Joseph Mendes da Costa." Perhaps more importantly, Mothes identifies the glamourous and impeccably coiffed and outfitted patron as "the famous dancer Cléo de Mérode, who, like a muse, lends her image to the gallery" (http://hicsa.univ-paris1.fr/documents/file/4-Mothes-Maison%20moderne.pdf, p. 17). Note that Orazi also incorporates the store's stylized "MM" logo, designed by Georges Lemmen. In addition to this rare and important poster, Orazi himself designed some items to be sold in the store. Lemercier, Paris DESCRIPTION: Noted by Broido, this unique poster promoting Massenet’s opera has been created to resemble “a papyrus, torn, eaten away by the centuries. Orazi has created a poster that is the first to have such a curious form.” Such a different design is in perfect harmony with the opera’s plot, which takes place in Ancient Egypt during Byzantine rule. Drawn to the beautiful courtesan Thais, a Cenobite monk attempts to convert her from worshiping Venus to worshiping the Christian God. Ultimately, it is revealed that his interest in her is entirely rooted in lust, whereas her morals and sense of honor are far superior. (Art Nouveau; Opera)

The Maison, however, had a generally younger clientele and was more at the forefront of the movement than Bing’s. Orazi, the master lithographer and designer featured at the gallery, created one of the most brilliant masterpieces of the era to promote the gallery. The model, in serene stillness, is surrounded by all manner of delicate object d’art, from elaborate combs to fanciful lamps, curious statues to languid glassware. A tour de force in graphic design! Condition B+: replaced losses in upper right corner, slightly into image; repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and image and along horizontal folds; repaired pin holes in margins. Framed. MANUEL ORAZI (1860-1934) THÉÂTRE DE LOIE FULLER / EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE. 1900. 78 3/4x24 inches, 200x61 cm. Manuel Orazi, Paris. Condition B+ / B: partially-replaced side margins; expertly-repaired tears, minor restored losses, creases and restoration in margins and image and along horizontal seam; repaired pin holes in corners. Two-sheets. Mounted on Japan. Orazi was born in Rome and added his Italian flair to the French Art Nouveau style in both his illustrations and posters. This poster is for Loie Fuller's special theatre at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. One of the major attractions of the fair was the Rue de Paris, a street where famous concert halls and cabarets like the Chat Noir and the Grand Guignol set up mini theatres. One such venue was the Palais de la Danse, where dancer Loie Fuller had been hired to perform. At the last minute, she decided to open her own theatre at the fair instead and chose Orazi to design her poster. Her act, "La Danse Serpentine," involved colored spotlights shining on veils she wore around her body. In 1893, Chéret made a series of posters depicting the dancer - each in a different color. Seven years later, Orazi uses the same technique. This extraordinary, elongated image exists in three different color variations. It is without a doubt the most enigmatic poster designed for her, infused with pure artistic inspiration. Delicately and intricately colored, the dancer swirls beneath a falling bouquet of roses. As the flowers are caught up in the vortex of her dance, they are transformed into snowflakes, crystals and round decorative motifs. Throughout the image, the gradation of colors is skillfully handled, supporting Maindron's claim that Orazi was "a magnificent lithographer." This mysterious and fascinating image is one of the best and rarest of all the Loie Fuller posters. Condition A-: minor tears and creases in margins; loss in lower left corner; time-staining in margins and image. Matted and framed. In anticipation of the Exposition Universelle in 1900, the Hippodrome opened in 1899 on the Boulevard de Clichy. It was a beautiful, gigantic hall, with seating for up to 5,000 spectators as well as its own stables. It was the place to stage and to watch great equine spectacles in Paris. Orazi was born in Rome, received his artistic training at the famed Italian printing house of Ricordi, and then moved to Paris where he achieved instant success by participating in the second exhibition at Siegfried Bing''s gallery L''Art Nouveau. In his flamboyant style he designed some of the most remarkable Art Nouveau posters such as La Maison Moderne, Theatre de Loie Fuller and this image for a horse-mounted spectacle. As Orazi''s work always incorporated elements of Roman and Byzantine design, this commission must have felt custom-made for him, as he could let his ornamental creativity run freely. Indeed, the ornamentation on the central figure is something to behold. Curiously, though he depicts the beautiful ceiling of the Hippodrome, Orazi also depicts the entire arena empty of viewers.
