BIOGRAPHY: Born Aaron Isaac Orentlicherman in the Ukrainian town of Proskurov, he changed his name as an artist to Henri Oren and came to the United States with family members at the age of eight. He was raised in Meriden, Connecticut, and took lessons from a local artist, Charlotte Lilla Yale. Although his father discouraged him, Oren said he "would rather die than not be an artist."He earned a scholarship to the Yale School of Fine Art where he studied with William Sergeant Kendall, a master of drawing, and then on a Yale scholarship went to Europe for further study. In 1919, he sailed for France and enrolled in the Academy Julian in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon de la Society and the Grand Palais. In 1921, Oren set up a studio in Meriden and took the name of Henri Oren, but portrait commissions were few. In 1923, he moved to New York City where he exhibited with the Society of Independent Artists. In 1928, he married May Halpersohn, and to supplement his income from portrait painting, he, with her assistance as well as that of her sister, did textile designs for silk dresses. They traced old fabric designs in the Metropolitan Museum. However, the Depression ended the manufacturer's business, and Oren worked as a commercial artist in other endeavors. He and his wife also took half of their savings, a thousand dollars, and traveled in Europe where he painted the French and Austrian landscape. Upon his return, he showed increasing interest in landscape and exhibited with the Brooklyn Society of Artists and the Brooklyn Museum. The artist and his family that now included a son Michel traveled in upstate New York especially Woodstock, and also Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. In 1941, Oren began watercolor landscapes of European scenes, using black and white postcards for his subject matter. He also did idyllic garden and park scenes of the Brooklyn area as well as ship yard paintings in very bright oils.Sadly his career was cut short by his death from liver cancer in 1953, possibly caused from a toxic reaction to his paints.
