      CARMELO ORTIZ DE ELGEA (Aretxavaleta, Álava, 1944). Untitled, 2001. Oil on wood conglomerate. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measures: 60 x 60 cm. Apprenticed at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vitoria, Carmelo Ortiz received a grant for artistic studies from the Fundación Vidal y Fernando de Amárica, which enabled him to move to Madrid to continue his apprenticeship at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. In the capital he met the painter and engraver from San Sebastian, Luis García Ochoa, the artist Julián Gil from La Rioja and the painter Luís Pinto-Coelho from Lisbon. He also became acquainted with the work of Tàpies, which made a notable impression on him. In 1966 he founded the Orain Group together with Joaquín Fraile and Juan Mieg, and was awarded second prize in the II Gran Premio de Pintura Vasca. In 1967 the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council dedicated an exhibition to him in the Salones de Cultura in Olaguibel Street. He also exhibited in Donostia-San Sebastián and Bilbao. During this period he travelled to France and Italy, returning in 1972, when he took part in the Pamplona Encounters. In 1984, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum decided to organise the first retrospective exhibition on the painter from Alava, under the name Carmelo Ortiz de Elgea: Paisaiatik Paisaiara 1952-1984, also exhibited in the Sala Prudencio in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Since this first retrospective, there has been a large number of exhibitions focusing on the work of this artist. Throughout the 1980s alone, around 30 exhibitions were held, including solo and group shows. Among his latest exhibitions is the one held together with José Luis Zumeta, Luz adentro, organised at Artium, the Basque Centre-Museum of Contemporary Art in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
