George Earl Ortman was an American painter, printmaker, constructionist and sculptor. His work has been referred to as Neo-Dada, pop art, minimalism and hard-edge painting. His constructions, built with a variety of materials and objects, deal with the exploration off visual language derived from geometry_geometry as symbol and sign. He studied at the Atelier 17, a printmaking school founded by the English painter and printmaker Stanley William Hayter (1949). Later that year, he left for Paris where he studied at the Atelier Andr_ Lhote (1949_50). Upon his return to New York City he studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts (1950_51). Biography from the Archives of askART: Born in Oakland, California in 1926, George Earl Ortman studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland from 1947-48; with Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York City in 1949; at the Atelier André Lhote in Paris from 1949-50; and at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York City from 1950-51. In 1953 Ortman and the actress, Julie Bovasso, founded the off-Broadway theater, Tempo Playhouse, in New York City. This theatre group introduced the work of Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet and others to an American audience. During the same year, Ortman had his first solo exhibition at the Tanager Gallery in New York City. Since that time he has had 38 solo exhibitions across the US and in Canada. Ortman taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1960-65, serving as co-chairman of the Fine Arts Department from 1963-65; at New York University from 1963-65; at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey from 1966-69; and at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI as Head of the Graduate School Painting Department from 1970-91. 1969 Art in America Backgammon Game by George Ortman. Designed by George Ortman and produced by Georg Jensen in 1969, for the "Art in America: Art for Everyday Living" series of artist's games. In an effort to engage wider audiences with contemporary art, in the 1960s and ’70s Art In America magazine produced a series called “Art for Everyday Living, "where they commissioned artists to design coins, ceramics, lithographs, children’s toys, needlepoint projects and games. Some of the most prominent contemporary artists at that time applied their talent to the creation of new designs of well known games for an Art In America "Art for Everyday Living" project. These games were manufactured by Georg Jensen complete with all playing pieces. Each game involves the player in a unique way both as the creator and as the participant in an exceptionally amusing game. This Backgammon game includes (15) yellow and (15) red custom plastic checkers and (1) cup. Board measures 24in x 20in. Chips measure 1.25in on diameter each. George Earl Ortman was an American painter, printmaker, constructionist and sculptor. His work has been referred to as Neo-Dada, pop art, minimalism and hard-edge painting. His constructions, built with a variety of materials and objects, deal with the exploration off visual language derived from geometry_geometry as symbol and sign. He studied at the Atelier 17, a printmaking school founded by the English painter and printmaker Stanley William Hayter (1949). Later that year, he left for Paris where he studied at the Atelier Andr_ Lhote (1949_50). Upon his return to New York City he studied at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts (1950_51). In 1970 Ortman assumed the position of Head of the Painting Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills. His wife of 30 years died in 1991. The following year Ortman left Cranbrook. Returning to the East Coast, he moved to Castine, Maine. In 1954 and 1960, he showed simplified geometric constructions at the Stable Gallery. This work was viewed by Donald Judd as a precursor to Minimalism. In 1965 Ortman was appointed artist in residence at Princeton University, and was honored with a retrospective at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
