      • Arthur Osver "Equinox" Oil On Canvas
        Mar. 21, 2023

Arthur Osver "Equinox" Oil On Canvas

        Est: $1,500 - $3,000

Arthur Osver (American, 1912-2006). Oil on canvas painting titled "Equinox" depicting a colorful abstract composition. Signed along the lower left. Signed, titled, and dated along the verso. With a label from Fairweather Hardin Gallery in Chicago affixed along the verso. Osver settled in Greenwich Village in 1940 and became deeply immersed in his location, referencing American industrial forms that he saw everyday. In 1952 Osver won the Prix de Rome, and was pushed into an unfamiliar space, leading to a new way of painting for the artist. Though he moved more and more towards abstraction, becoming part of the burgeoning Abstract Expressionism movement, his works often returned to familiar subjects including those industrial forms he so loved in his earlier paintings. Throughout his life, even after he moved to St. Louis in 1960, his subject matter often returned to New York. Visual perception was key for the artist and the city he spent his early artistic career in remained vital to him, even in his later years. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Whitney Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

      • Arthur Osver, American 1912-2006, GPC: Parade, oil on canvas
        Mar. 18, 2023

Arthur Osver, American 1912-2006, GPC: Parade, oil on canvas

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

Arthur Osver American, 1912-2006 GPC: Parade oil on canvas signed lower right, framed. Arthur Osver was a renowned 20th c. American master painter of abstraction and of American and European cityscape elements. Born in Chicago and active in New York City, Rome and Paris, he eventually settled in St. Louis where he came to teach painting at Washington University, following in the footsteps of other major artists recruited by the university such as Max Beckmann and Philip Guston. Osver was married to fellow painter Ernestine Betsberg, and they both kept their studios within the first home that they ever purchased that was located in Webster Groves, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Osver's work is well known, and his paintings have been collected by the MET, MOMA, the Whitney, AIC, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Saint Louis Art Museum where a restrospective was organized in 2000; Philip Slein Gallery in St. Louis has also exhibited many pieces of his work. Furthermore, Osvar is featured in a recent monograph by Angela Miller entitled _Arthur Osver: Urban Landscape, Abstraction, and the Mystique of Place_ (2019). This fantastic large-scale mid-century abstract work features a variety of lighty colored and shaded vertical whitish shapes that resemble a group of miscellaneous standing bodies each individually outlined in a different select touch of a vibrant shade of color (blue, orange, black, green, grey, pink, purple, etc.). This painting of a parade came out of Osver's time in Paris when he made a series of work based on the the form and environs of the city's Grand Palais (which explains how "GP" is present in many of his painting titles).

Arthur Osver American, 1912-2006 Study, 1975 mixed media signed, framed. Arthur Osver was a renowned 20th C. This fantastic small-scale mid-century abstract study for a larger work features a variety of lightly colored and shaded vertical pastel blue, whitish and grey forms interspersed with other shapes and tinges of colors including a vibrant chunky crescent moon and a couple of apostrophe-like forms. The painting is dated 4/5/75 so it was completed during the springtime--and it very much looks like a form of abstract rain falling among a few trees and with bright yellow sunshine popping out through it all.

        ARTHUR OSVER (AMERICAN, 1912-2006)

        Est: $100 - $300

ARTHUR OSVER (AMERICAN, 1912-2006) Polychrome lithograph, hand-signed and editioned 32/60 lower right. For the Gallery Of Loretto; Hilton Center (October 15th through November 15th). Behind glass, painted wooden frame. About the Artist: As a young artist in the 1940s, Arthur Osver won international acclaim for his evocative depictions of the American city. And though his work evolved dramatically over the next six decades — growing increasingly fluid and gestural — that ramshackle topography remained part of his painterly DNA. Born in Chicago in 1912, Osver briefly studied journalism at Northwestern University before transferring to the School of the Art Institute in 1931. There he met fellow painter Ernestine Betsberg, who would become his wife of nearly 70 years. MoMA purchased Osver’s “Melancholy of a Rooftop” (1942) and included it in the exhibition “Romantic Painting in America” (1943). A fuse was lit. Over the next decade-and-a-half, Osver’s work appeared in major surveys and one-person shows; graced the covers of ArtNews and Fortune magazines; and was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Saint Louis Art Museum and Washington University, among many others. Osver agreed to a one-year contract at (Washington) University. He stayed for two decades, and in many ways became the public face of the WashU painting program. (Betsberg also taught for a semester, before deciding that she disapproved of grades.) The couple bought a century-old home in Webster Groves. For Osver, this newfound stability coincided with ambitious formal experimentation. Equally inspired and disconcerted by his time in Italy — with its ancient, light-filled cities, so different from urban America — Osver’s compositions grew brighter and more abstract. His brushwork became looser, his hues more saturated, his textures more varied. He painted in oils but also acrylics and even latex house paints. Through it all, Osver retained a sense of architectural scale and structure. His “Pillar and Diagonal” paintings suggest classical building elements. The towering “Grand Palais” series recasts the famed Parisian hall as a grid on which to explore form, color and shape. “There is mystique in places and things,” Osver observed in a 1968 exhibition catalog. “I once labeled myself essentially a landscapist. In a way I still am. Only, the landscape is becoming more and more an inner personal one.” From Washington University's "The Source" 2019. Impression: 19.5" height, 17.75" width; frame: 28.5" height, 23.25" width
