Jorge Oteiza Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1908 - d. 2003

Jorge Oteiza Enbil (October 21, 1908 – April 9, 2003), was a Basque Spanish sculptor, painter, designer and writer from the Basque Autonomous Community, renowned for being one of the main theorists on Basque modern art.[1][2] Oteiza was born in Orio (Gipuzkoa, Basque Autonomous Community, Spain).[2] He moved to South America in 1935, just before the Spanish Civil War, and stayed there for 14 years.[3] In 1963 he published Quosque tandem!, an essay about the aesthetics inherent to Basque soul, based on Basque prehistoric art and Basque people's anthropological roots.[4] Three years on, he contributed to found the artistic group Gaur.

He died in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, in 2003.[2] Following his will, a month after his death a museum dedicated to his career was opened in Alzuza, Navarre, in the place where he had lived since 1975. The Oteiza Museum is a monographic exhibition space housing the personal collection of Jorge Oteiza, which includes 1,690 sculptures, 2,000 experimental pieces from the artist's Chalk Laboratory, and an extensive collection of drawings and collages.

JORGE OTEIZA ENBIL (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). "Visitation of the Virgin to Saint Elizabeth", 1973. Bronze. Signed on the base and numbered. Work catalogued in Oteiza Propósit experimental; Fundació Caixa de Pensions , 1988. Barcelona, p 84. (Fig 3) Measurements: 36 x 12 x 13 cm. In this bronze, as in other religious-themed sculptures by Oteiza, the artist manages to transcend the anecdote of the biblical passage in order to rescue a spirituality anchored in the depths of time. Here he opens a link between the Christian sacred and primitive sacredness. In this piece, endowed with a striking visual and expressive force, the contemporary is manifested through a deep passion for ancestral mysticism. Oteiza evokes Basque prehistory to endow his sculptures with mythical qualities. The fears and desires of primitive man, his beliefs and hopes, are not very different from our own. The two figures appear fused in their condition of pregnant women, carrying in their wombs promises of the future. The textures take on relief, the empty and the full ones dialogue with each other. Both women hollow their filiform arms and embrace their ribbon-like bellies. Jorge Oteiza is one of the fundamental Basque artists of the 20th century, as well as one of the most influential. The echoes of his work are perceptible, from the fifties to the present day, in the work of numerous sculptors, painters and architects. Self-taught, Oteiza began his career making sculptures within the orbit of expressionism or primitivism initiated by Gauguin, Picasso and Derain. After a long stay in South America, the sculptor developed, both theoretically and practically, the foundations of his aesthetics, and brought out the "natural" sculptor in him, taking the necessary steps to become an artist in control of his mechanisms and tools. This intellectual adventure will be reflected in texts such as "Letter to the artists of America" (1944) or "The aesthetic interpretation of American megalithic statuary" (1952). During these years he will teach at the School of Ceramics in Buenos Aires. At the end of the forties he returned to Spain, and in his work the influence of massive and monolithic sculpture underwent a process of dematerialization. In the early fifties, Oteiza is immersed in an abstract research, and begins what he calls his "Experimental Purpose" (1955), experimenting along the lines of constructivism. In 1957 he presented his work at the São Paulo Biennial, being awarded the extraordinary prize for sculpture. Two years later, understanding that he had reached his conclusive phase, Oteiza abandoned sculptural activity. During the sixties and seventies he devoted himself to researching the Basque language and the popular manifestations of his people. In 1988 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. He is currently represented in the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation in Alzuza, the Reina Sofía National Art Center, the MACBA, the Guggenheim in Bilbao and New York, the Telefónica and Caixa Galicia Foundations and the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, among other public and private collections.

JORGE OTEIZA ENBIL (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). "Basque Centaur". Bronze. Signed. Measurements: 13 x 10 x 6 cm. In this work Oteiza uses an experimental figurative sculptural language to offer us the image of a centaur reduced to its maximum expression. Another sculpture of this half-man-half-horse creature is kept at the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation. Jaione Apalategi, a member of the Oteiza Foundation-Museum who, as a doctor in Pedagogy, has the special responsibility of researching and disseminating the artist's contributions, explains it as follows: "The meaning of this sculpture, half animal half human, walks the earth with its animal part, while the head, its human part, is submerged in the sky, trying to find a solution to the overwhelming human existence". Jorge Oteiza is one of the fundamental Basque artists of the 20th century, as well as one of the most influential. Measurements: 27 x 16 x 12 cm (bust); 8 x 29 x 14 cm (base). Sculpture by Jorge Oteiza representing a bust of the founder of the Basque nationalist party, Sabino Arana. He accentuates the expressiveness of the face by exaggerating his features. The piece belongs to the primitivist figurative line that he developed in his first period, although this bust is dated in the 1970s. Oteiza made the sculpture to help cover the costs of setting up the Sabino Arana Foundation. Zapiak is considered Oteiza's last work, which, although it materialised in the 2000s, had been conceived by the artist in the 1970s, the result of his experimentation in the project known as the "Chalk Laboratory", in which the sculptor sought to extend spatial action through open forms, based on the tetrahedrons of the chalk and the divergences they generate. This sculpture is a reflection of the dynamic and light movement transferred to the use of bronze. The piece reflects the tension between each of the parts and the whole, which results in a piece of great rotundity where the space harmonises with the rotundity of the bronze. After Franco's death and at a time when tensions between the centre and the periphery of the Spanish state reached a critical point, a chalk model emerged as the inspiration for this work, which, due to its articulation resembling a sleeve cut, came to symbolise the relations between the Basque Country and Madrid at the time. This model was not materialised in bronze until the early 1990s, under the title Hau Madrilentzat and, paradoxically, it was enlarged in 1992 for the Bank of Spain's headquarters in Madrid. The work, which quickly became popular, was intended as a response to political centralism. Oteiza tried to reflect the transmutation of the everyday towards a spiritual ideal, where the catalyst is the work of art. Thus assimilating Platonic philosophy, of an immutable world of concepts or ideas, where perceptions are prisoners of the changeable, for this reason his metaphysical boxes flee from all anecdotal elements. JORGE OTEIZA ENBIL (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). "Zazpiak", 2001. Patinated bronze. P/A copy. Current print run of 6 copies plus one Author's proof. Work reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of the artist. Volume II, p. 611. Signed and justified by the artist. Size: 35 x 53 x 47 cm. Jorge Oteiza is one of the fundamental Basque artists of the 20th century, as well as one of the most influential. The echoes of his work are perceptible, from the 1950s to the present day, in the work of numerous sculptors, painters and architects. Self-taught, Oteiza began his career by creating sculptures in the sphere of expressionism or primitivism initiated by Gauguin, Picasso and Derain. After a long stay in South America, the sculptor developed, both theoretically and practically, the foundations of his aesthetic, and brought out the "natural" sculptor in him, taking the necessary steps to become an artist in control of his mechanisms and tools. This intellectual adventure was reflected in texts such as "Letter to the artists of America" (1944) and "The aesthetic interpretation of American megalithic statuary" (1952). During these years he taught at the Escuela de Cerámica in Buenos Aires. At the end of the 1940s he returned to Spain, and in his work the influence of massive, monolithic sculpture underwent a process of dematerialisation. At the beginning of the 1950s, Oteiza was immersed in abstract research and began what he called his "Experimental Purpose" (1955), experimenting along the lines of constructivism. In 1957 he presented his work at the São Paulo Biennial and was awarded the special prize for sculpture. Two years later, believing that he had reached his conclusive phase, Oteiza abandoned sculpture. During the sixties and seventies he devoted himself to research into the Basque language and the popular manifestations of his people. In 1988 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. He is currently represented in the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation in Alzuza, the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, the MACBA, the Guggenheim in Bilbao and New York, the Telefónica and Caixa Galicia Foundations and the Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid, among other public and private collections.

Measurements: 7.5 x 10 x 5 cm. In this work Oteiza uses an experimental figurative sculptural language, reduced to its minimum expression, dominated by the emptiness in its interior. Thus creating a disoccupation of matter itself, and exemplifying the dialectic between space and matter. A resource that became a constant throughout his artistic production. JORGE OTEIZA ENBIL (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). "La desocupación de la esfera", 1958. Bronze, copy 50/250. Signed and numbered at the bottom. Measurements: 20 x 12 x 12 cm. In the mid-fifties, Jorge Oteiza began to investigate the square and the cube as essential units. In his metaphysical endeavour to capture the essence of emptiness and generate energy, the series "La desocupación de la esfera" (1957-58), awarded a prize at the IV Bienal de Arte de São Paulo in 1957, occupied a central place. This sculpture, which influenced the Brazilian neo-concrete movement, is a dynamic construction based on curved twists. Building on the research begun in "Experimental Laboratory", Oteiza tackled the cylindrical form by means of metal fragments with which he articulated two curved shapes with different spatial orientations. The sculpture, in his own words, proposed "the statue as a purely spatial organism". The disoccupations of the sphere possess a conceptual complexity that translates into a unitary and essential object, suggesting a centrifugal movement that liberates a nuclear space. JORGE OTEIZA (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). Untitled. Chalk on paper. Work reproduced in Jorge Oteiza "Dibujos, bocetos, college" II Volume, 2007, p.25. Size: 39 x 31 cm; 77 x 69 cm (frame). Fleeing from the usual constructivism which characterises him, in this work he conceives a portrait, based on simple lines, which have a geometrical quality. By means of book-like strokes he configures a male face, as a sketch, a practice or a game. The lines are apparently random but precise, as they determine a face with marked features, a moustache and a bulge in the upper area, which may well represent the txapela. JORGE OTEIZA ENBIL (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). "Law of changes". Chalks and cardboard. Signed in the lower right area. Measures: 47 x 267 cm; 77 x 297 cm (frame). This work comes from the hand of "Experimental Purpose" created in 1957, with which Oteiza was awarded at the IV Biennial of Sao Paulo. From that work, Oteiza continued to reflect on creation, expression, and the phases of artistic development, resulting in the "Law of Changes". All his theories were exposed in his essays "Ideology and technique for a law of changes in art" of 1964 and "Art as a political school of awareness" of 1965. For Oteiza, this study on the law of changes was used as a creative resource that allowed him to theorize about artistic language and its evolutionary development. During these years he taught at the School of Ceramics in Buenos Aires. JORGE OTEIZA ENBIL (Orio, Guipúzcoa, 1908 - San Sebastián, 2003). "Metaphysical Box, Tribute to the Annunciation by Fra Angelico". Iron. Signed, titled and dedicated in the lower area of the right side. Measures: 23 x 32 x 24.5 cm. It has slight marks. The Metaphysical Box was a project initiated by Oteiza in 1957, which represented the volumetric materialization of the artist's theoretical ideas. These ideas dealt with themes such as purity and spiritual elevation through the empirical use of art. Although on many occasions his work, specifically the metaphysical boxes, have been considered pieces close to the precepts of American minimalism, Oteiza tried to reflect the transmutation of the everyday towards a spiritual ideal, where the catalyst is the work of art. Thus assimilating the Platonic philosophy of an immutable world of concepts or ideas, where perceptions are prisoners of the changeable, for this reason his metaphysical boxes flee from any anecdotal element.
