Note At the conclusion of the day-long Battle of Brandywine Creek, September 11, 1777, the Continental Army was in retreat having suffered a staggering loss to British forces under the command of General William Howe. The unfortunate outcome of this battle allowed British troops to occupy Philadelphia and caused the Continental Congress to flee to Lancaster, and later to York.

      A prolific portrait painter, Otis was a student of John Wesley Jarvis in the early 1800s, Gilbert Stuart, and Thomas Sully. In 1812, he moved to Philadelphia and became an art teacher and began his career as a portrait painter, painting over 200 subjects including portraits for a national biography series of the New York State Historical Association. Some of his subjects were Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Thomas Paine and Gilbert Stuart. In 1824, he was elected a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Various exhibition labels on reverse. Minor inpainting. Artist: BASS OTIS (AMERICAN, 1784 - 1861). Condition: Very good. Created: 1838. Frame: No frame. Medium: Oil on canvas laid on board.
