      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

JOHN OUTTERBRIDGE (1933 - ) Dos Hombres. Welded and painted metal and wooden base, 1968. Approximately 127x166x90 mm; 5x6 1/4x3 1/2 inches. Signed twice and dated '68 in ink on the bottom of the base. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; thence by descent to a private collection. This is an early example of John Outterbridge's assemblage, in which he manipulated found objects from South Central Los Angeles to reflect both an African and American heritage. Assemblage helped define the emerging aesthetic of African-American sculpture on the West Coast in the 1960s found in the works of Mel Edwards, David Hammons and Noah Purifoy. Outterbridge was a very influential voice in his community as a founding member and the director of the Studio Watts Workshop, the first art school created in South Central. His work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University, Madison, WI.
