          Jul. 29, 2021

          Vladimir Ovchinnikov (Russian, 1941-2015) (AR)

          Est: €32,000 - €36,000

Vladimir Ovchinnikov (Russian, 1941-2015) (AR), The Temptation of St. Anthony, 1977, titled in cyrilics: "В.Овчинников Искушение святого Антония" oil on canvas, 75 x 60 cm. Signed and dated bottom right and titled, signed, dated on the reverse. Provenance: George Costakis Collection, Athens, Greece. Notes: Vladimir Ovchinnikov was a leading member of the Leningrad unofficial art movement beginning in the 1960s. He was involved in many of the movement's landmark events, including the Exhibition of Workmen Artists held at the Hermitage Museum in 1964, which was open for only two days before being closed by the KGB. Ovchinnikov never received formal art training, although he worked as an assistant stage designer at the Kirov Theater in Leningrad. In the mid-1970s, Ovchinnikov participated in the first officially-sanctioned exhibition of nonconformist art in Leningrad. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Group of Painters, led by Mikhail Chemiakin. Ovchinnikov's scenes are drawn from the life of the Leningrad suburbs. His distinctive, simplified, naïve style employs full-bodied tubular figures, resembling toys made out of polished wooden blocks. Since his figures display no emotion, the artist's intentions are conveyed through gesture, the careful deployment of figures and objects, and artful theatrical spotlighting. Lot location: Loudos Auctions Athens.

          Nov. 30, 2013

Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Oil Painting of a Winter Landscape, 1977

          Est: €4,800 - €6,000

Oil on canvas Russia, 1977 Vladimir Ovchinnikov (b. 1941) - Russian painter Signed in Cyrillic and dated 'V. Ovchinnikov 77' Overall dimensions framed: 42 x 62 cm Good condition Provenance: from a German private collection A surreal winter landscape in muted colours by a well-known representative of the Russian non-conformist movement; Ovchinnikov's oil paintings from the same year fetch up to 70,000 Euros at auctions This oil painting by Russian artist Vladimir Ovchinnikov from 1977 shows a snowy, surreal landscape in muted shades of green and brown. The artist takes everyday scenes, which he finds in the rural suburbs of St. Petersburg, and alienates them by infiltrating bizarre objects, creating surreal compositions - always with a touch of humour - and thus triggers unexpected associations. Inspired by the Theatre of the Absurd from the 1950s and 60s, Ovchinnikov makes the absurdity of human existence the subject of his works. Here the viewer can see one of the artist's typical corpulent figures. She pulls a sledge upon which a giant snowman head, including coal eyes and carrot nose, is mounted. In the background two wooden huts surrounded by radio masts create the scenery. Like the figure, the image itself seems voluminous, an illusion created by the rounded horizon. The rural idyll is broken open by elements reminiscent of rockets and satellites. Thus, this work might also be understood as a humorous allusion to Soviet space travel in the 1970s. The painting by Vladimir Ovchinnikov is in good condition. Some colour losses and craquelure have been painted over, for example along the edges, on the sky and the house. Above the signature lower right there is an approximately 4 cm long superficial scratch, there is minor colour abrasion along the left border. There is colour loss to the signature, which has also been touched up. The work is signed lower right in Cyrillic and dated 'V. Ovchinnikov 77'. The simple wooden frame shows slight signs of age and wear. Framed the work measures 42 x 62 cm. The stretcher frame measures 40.3 x 60 cm. Vladimir Ovchinnikov (b. 1941) Vladimir Ovchinnikov was born in 1941 near the city of Perm in Russia. Even as a child, the great-nephew of the famous illustrator Vladimir Taburin was trying to develop his own creative language in his drawings. Like many artists of the time, Ovchinnikov had no interest in an art education under the Soviet system, and sought out alternatives to develop his creativity. In St. Petersburg, he worked as a decorator assistant at the Kirov Theater and became acquainted with the circle of the so-called non-conformists. In 1960s he organised, together with young fellow artists, a first exhibition of his works. Here Ovchinnikov showed a series of paintings in which he combined a modern formal language and biblical and mythological subject matter. He was particularly inspired by the Theatre of the Absurd developed by Borges, Beckett and Ionesco. Ovchinnikov now lives and works in St. Petersburg. Since the 1980s, Ovchinnikov has regularly exhibited in the U.S., France, Germany and China. His works are in the collections of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Art Museum of Beijing.
